It’s clear as day the issue is the strut. Replace the strut with aftermarket and the noise is gone.

The oem struts are clearly defective in some way which results in the noise.

Thanks for the update! Maybe there’s a solution in the future?!
I believe the service tech was being forthright and honest about what he told me. He offered to keep my car at the dealership and continue searching for the source of the thump but I declined since he had no clear idea of what else could be causing this problem. He also put a note in my car's service file that says he is the only service tech at that dealership who should be allowed to work on my vehicle from now on.

Drove BoilerM ‘s car today. Thanks again for letting me drive, fully sold on getting the Bilstein Evo S coilovers. Noticeably less body roll, a little bit more firm in comfort (but still comfortable for daily driving) and most importantly, absolutely NO thump. Will be purchasing and scheduling installation very soon

Be sure to order SE not S, otherwise there will be no comfort mode ;-)

My bad, you are correct! The SE is for adaptive suspension. Bilstein 49-305135

For anyone buying now, this site has the best price at the moment: https://www.mlperformanceusa.com/pro...e-coilover-kit

It would appear this is correct and there is a design flaw in the OEM rear shocks. My hope was that maybe there was just a bad production run and that later production rear shocks would not have this defect, but from my recent experience it would appear this is not the case.

I guess I'm just going to have to live with the "rear thump" unless BMW steps up with a fix / TSB since I don't feel like shelling out $2700 + the install cost for Bilstein Evo SE coilovers.

I have a 22 m240i drive with about 19,000 miles. I never had this rear suspension "thump" but I just installed eibach springs last night and I was worried that it might trigger the "thump". Fortunately...no creaks thumps or any suspension noise. Ride is amazing and looks freaking perfect for those that are curious lol.

If you talk to the guys at your dealer, let them know we have guys who have solved the problem with coilovers. It may help them pinpoint the problem.

But yeah, it’s a steep price to fix a defect.

I just took delivery of my M240i in March. I have about 600 miles and I'm also noticing this thumping when driving over rough roads. I'll be taking a road trip next weekend, so I'll have the trunk pretty well loaded with golf clubs and luggage, so I'll be curious to see if that affects the thumping at all. Pretty annoying that after a couple years this is still an issue on this model.

Ill be curious to hear if they honor that when you go to purchase. At current wholesale pricing, that would put them at a loss after credit card processing fees and shipping. Maybe they have an old set in stock they just want to dump.

Took a trip to see the eclipse and the weather was in the mid 70s down there. My thump was 90% gone after a long winter of unbearable thumping. Definitely temp related, is almost unnoticeable when it gets above 55 - 60 degrees.

With that being said, still going to get the Bilsteins. Not putting up with this madness next cold season…

That’s what is so discouraging to me. I took delivery in Feb and hadn’t heard or read about it at all. After a day I noticed and looked for anything about a klunking sound on here. Something so widespread and still no fix makes me think they are just hoping people just accept it. And with warm weather coming it’ll get even less attention.

We’re thinking it’s the adaptive shocks that are somehow making the sound

I have a 2023 M240I and have had the same issue. After taking it to a second dealership service dept, I finally got a tech who confirmed the noise. I was tired of trying to describe the noise, so I put my iPhone in video mode and put it face down in the trunk to record the noise. After letting the tech hear my recording he was able to hear the same sound on our test drive. The shop then utilized chassis ears and determined that the issue was either the right rear shock or the mount. Well no sh.. Captain Obvious. The parts have been ordered to be replaced under warranty.
I will let you all know if this fixes the issue. It is comes back I will chime back in as well.

Sorry,

For some reason this sight will not allow me to upload for security reasons. I tried. The phone recording of the noise worked great though.
With my phone linked I was able to play the recording of the noise back to the Tech through the car speakers. Worked great! Very audible.
Hope this helps.

I hope you have a better outcome than me. Just a few weeks ago I had both the right and left rear shocks and upper mounts replaced (as I described in post #351) and it made no discernable difference with the thumping noise I was experiencing.

After I switched from Dunlop WS5s back to summer factory Michelin PS4s, I think it's less noticeable, but it's still there. I have ZTK with ZR19 245/255, and controlled shock absorbers. It's a shame

We really should write a letter to corporate and have everyone who has this sign it with their VINs.
