Beep, Beep you're speeding!

Cars must be built to beep at speeding drivers in California under new bill
No it isn't the Onion it's the Washington Examiner
The California senate passed legislation that would require all new cars sold or manufactured in the Golden State to beep at drivers and visually alert them when they exceed the speed limit.

Known as passive Intelligent Speed Assistance, the technology will alert drivers if they exceed the speed limit by greater than 10 miles per hour.

If the bill passes, it is very likely to have ripple effects on car sales across the country, considering that California’s auto market is so large that car makers would make all of their vehicles to be in compliance with the law.

The bill moves to the State Assembly and must pass by Aug. 31.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/n...nder-new-bill/

You really can't make this stuff up.

California Senate Passes Bill Requiring Passive Speed Limiters
The bill requires that passive speed limiters be installed in all new cars manufactured or sold in California by 2032.
California Senate Bill 961 (SB 961) was passed by a 22-13 vote this week requiring that 50 percent of new vehicles manufactured or sold in California must have passive speed limiters installed by 2029. By 2032, that percentage increases to 100 percent.
A passive speed limiter is a system that warns drivers with audible and visual signals when their speed exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour. SB 961 applies to all trucks, buses and passenger vehicles manufactured or sold in the state. Emergency vehicles are exempt from the passive speed limiter requirement.
A passive speed limiter is also referred to as a “passive intelligent speed assistance system.” In the text of SB 961 that system is described as: “An integrated vehicle system that uses, at minimum, the GPS location of the vehicle compared with a database of posted speed limits, to determine the speed limit, and utilizes a brief, one-time visual and audio signal to alert the driver each time they exceed the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.”

Most cars already had this a decade ago. Now it's a requirement.

Sucks, but whatever. We know that all new cars are going to be shit in the near future. Nothing new.

Yes but most cars has the driver set the speed limit and not the government. That my friend is a whole different animal. Only matter of time till they go all Geico DriveEasy on you and start adding points to your license for exceeding the posted speed too often

There you go:
https://legiscan.com/CA/text/SB961/id/2900195

I like this part:
"This bill would require certain vehicles, commencing with the 2027 model year, to be equipped with an intelligent speed limiter, as specified, that would limit the speed of the vehicle to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. The bill would exempt emergency vehicles from this requirement and would authorize the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol to authorize the disabling of the system on other vehicles based on specified criteria.
A violation of either of these prohibitions would be punishable as a crime.
By creating a new criminal offense, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program."

What could possibly go wrong?

Welcome to Japan they had this passive system years ago and the first thing you do is, disconnect a wire to stop the nonsense.

Saudi had this as well. If you went over 120KM the beep beep beep goes off. I just took a screw driver and destroyed the speaker in the Toyota Coaster I drove from Riyadh to Al Kharj and back to Riyadh daily.

Was really good at drafting nascar style with those things. Spent way to much time in that region.

How long before this technology is used to notify the government that you're speeding and the next step will be fines to ensure compliance.

Nothing California mandates is ever good. The federal government gets lucky once in a while, but CA just misses every time.

The good news is they want the system GPS based so it in theory could also immediately shut off when you leave CA. I'd be ok with that.

How about BEEP BEEP BEEP GTFO of the left lane????

Left lane idiots are so much worse than speeders. We could probably cure 80% of traffic in most areas of this country if people would just stay the F out of the left lane.

Better yet, have them get a real license, you know, the kind where annually you have to pass a...

- written test
- driving test
- eye test
- hearing test
- spatial awareness test
- drug test

Get more people off the road that can't actually drive, that's your solution to everything from insurance premiums to the condition of roadways and global warming.

Oh yeah, and burn the license of the people drinking and driving. Never let them get in a car again.

Sorry, was that a rant? Oops. lol

Wait, it's California. Driving under the influence of alcohol - bad. Driving while stoned - good.

Problem with your theory is that the gutless weasels in most states piggy back their authoritarian dreams on to what ever California is doing or going to do. California politicians are never voted out for being stupid they are voted to higher office. Thus you are safe borrowing their laws and blaming it on California.

This is the first step in this ultimate goal. Followed closely by "beep beep - $200 has been deducted from you government controlled spending account and social credit score will be lowered by 14 points"

Yup. Absolutely the case. They might even just have your car drive off in the night and give it to someone in the name of equity. Do it enough and you get sent to a reeducation camp.
