M240i G42 or M2 G87?

I might be in the market of purchasing an M240i or an M2 but their price difference isn't really that close. It's so hard to choose between 2 good cars!

For reference, I'm looking for a daily drivable coupe that can be also fun but. I've seen mixed reviews on the M240i and M2 and some say the M2 is still daily drivable but the M240i is more value for money. I've owned and driven a B58 engine car (z4M40i) and there is no doubt I with the fun I got with that vehicle. But I'm in a pickle deciding between the B58 or S58.

Rob owns both cars. See his quick comparison (post 19) in the thread below...

Do you need xDrive for your daily commute? If not, buy an M2.

I have owned a 2020 Z4 M40i, also a 2023 M240xi and currently own a 2024 M2 manual. Without a doubt a m240xi is great value and a riot to drive around town. It's crazy capable and fast!! I put a downpipe in the m240xi and its sounds way better than my M2. I do really prefer the looks of the M2, the seats, the extra top end power, handling and brakes are also great. The xdrive is amazing in the winter but I bought a set of winters for my M2 and still drove it in the winter too (Yes, I am crazy LOL). Around town driving, to and from work the M240xi was more fun but in every other instance the M2 is a better drivers car. There is no question off the line and 1-2 gears the M240xi was faster, but once that M2 hits 3rd gear then it starts to pull hard. Yes, the automatic M2 would have been faster, but it had been 15 years since I have owned a manual and I figured it was time! I think the M2 is worth the extra money and will likely have much better resale value too.

Owned G42 now own M2 - G42 no doubt a very capable daily driver but mines a w/e Fun car and unfortunately G42 didn’t make me just want to pick keys up just for a drive without having a reason and I knew I would get bored of it soon. It gave me a little smile but not massive grins. I knew within 10 mins of demo ride on M2 that it was a lot more special and gave me big grins. Everything is more on point ( handling, suspension, thrill of acceleration ) M2 is also a very capable car as a daily. I would chose M2 any day of week unless I desperately needed X drive and if I needed the higher mpg. Only thing I miss is 360 ‘
Demo them back to back you’ll soon see the differences between them.

M240i is much more fuel efficient and offers a more compliant ride, along with being less expensive as you mentioned. Big downside is it's not available with a manual transmission.

I have a 2025 M2 on order (pending allocation), though I think the M240 is to oftentimes overlooked.

Not really that simple, though. The M240i is much more fuel efficient and that's a factor for many - especially those seeking daily drivers. M240i's ride quality is also less harsh and price is and it's a lot lower.

M2 is almost more expensive to insure on average.

Fuel economy comparisons here; both cars with 8 speed automatic. And because each car uses the same fuel tank, the M240i's range prior to refueling is proportionally greater.

What's fuel economy?

I own both models and they are, as previously discussed, 2 entirely different cars.

Make a list of your priorities.
The choice will be clear.

Good luck.

If BMW offered an M440i Gran Coupe with a stick then I would most likely have gone that route, but they don't and so I have ordered an M2...

I owned a Z4 M40 as a fun car and a 2015 M235 as a DD. Upgraded the Z4 to a 992 C2S Cabrio and the M235 to a 2024 M240.
The B58 is probably the best all around engine BMW ever made. And with the ZF8 it’s just a riot. As a daily, I prefer the M240.

Xdrive would be great considering I want it to be my daily and I don’t plan on hooning around or going to the track

Thanks for this input! Winter isn’t really a problem here in my country since it never snows here 😂 And I also agree with you on the B58 sounding better than the S58 (subjective topic LOL) But I guess I’m looking more on the direct power input coming from the xdrive since overtaking on the highway is quite often what I do here since we have so many slow drivers

Price is a big factor here in my country. I don’t know the price difference it is in other countries but an M240i and M2 price difference here is around $20,000 💀

$85,113 M240i
$102,519 M2

These are what they go for here in my country so price is also a factor

If you flip a coin for it and in the air you feel like it would be disappointing if one side did or didn't come up, then I think you have your answer!!

In other words, if a part of you really wants an M2 but the other side of you is saying "but G42 is better bang for the buck / im not really gonna track it / is it really a car that can be daily driven" then JUST GET THE M2!!

Think the M240i is enough of a car to be fun to drive. Heck my 230xi is fun to drive.

The flip side is with the M2 it can serve as a daily driver. One can daily drive any car just a matter of if one is willing to accept the consequences.

For instance at some point I daily drove a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. I could live with the 15mpg fuel consumption and the increase in servicing costs due to the more rapid accumulation of miles and the cost of consumables like tires and eventually brakes.

Before I bought my M2 I considered an M240i.

I built a M240i and an M2 and while the M2 was more money it was still well within my budget. But the M240i wasn't available with a 6-speed manual. And for my pleasure car I wanted a manual so I switched from an M240i to an M2.

Rather than build an M2 and order it I searched and found an M2 launch car on a dealer's lot and bought the M2. This April of 2023. Traded in the 230i.

When I bought the M2 my daily was a 2023 MINI JCW w/6-speed.

But about 9 months after buying the JCW I traded it in for a 2024 BMW 230xi.

The 230xi is my daily driver. It gets about the same gas mileage as the MINI JCW did. Both cars are about the same when it comes to capabilities and features although of course they differ considerably in the running gear department. The MINI JCW was FWD mated to a 6-speed manual vs. the 230xi being AWD mated to an 8-speed automatic.

But being an automatic the 230xi is a bit "better" in its role as a daily driver. And I could argue -- and did with myself -- the 230xi being AWD is better suited for my daily driver given where I live snow on the roads is a thing.

Sure I could have bought an M240i (or M240xi even) for my daily. Just the 230xi was a bit less money and while I could afford the M240i since I don't drive that much -- being retired -- my cars don't get a lot of use. If I'm going to buy a car to not use it a lot the 230xi is the better choice over the M240i...

An M240i meets everything you’ve listed at a lower price than M2.
You could always upgrade if it’s not enough.
YMMV
