Need Help: 230i RWD vs M240ix??
Hey gang... I have 230i on order (no allocation yet) and disappointed to hear HUD being removed from non M BMWs for all models & not just the New 2 Series. I really want HUD & this could be my last new sporty car.
I spec my 230i RWD to be similar to M240ix with M Sports Pkg, 19" wheels + Premium & Shadow Line along with HK audio. I compared vs M240ix and difference in price is ~ $7k, and yes I know $2k linked to the AWD. Therefore that means spending $5k for V6 turbo vs the 4 Turbo, can't find any other difference. (edit) Except for Rear Differential that's a net $1,300 to add on 230i. I already have the 19" M797 $600 wheel option so net $1,300 for the 1,900 dynamic handling pkg. That said, how does the BMW ix drive behave vs RWD on same vehicle?? I hear it has RWD bias plus quicker 0-60 but of course I am not racing. Vehicle might also stick better into corners, but ix also adds weight and ~ 3 MPG penalty on Highway. Is the ix drive worth 2k for those of us in the SouthEast USA? Coldest temps this vehicle will ever see are in the 40s. Therefore is the IX drive worth the $2k BMW charges?? love to hear opinions & experiences... thanks as I am toying with changing my build order

The question you should ask is if the M240i overall is worth the $7k. IMO it is. The B58TU alone make it worth the extra. It’s a completely different beast than the engine in the 230i. Huge gap in the M240i favor. |

hmmm... $5k for B58 6 Cycl turbo vs 4 Cycl B48. Also 2k for the x drive, and I rarely if ever drive my BMW in rain. Use wife's SUV instead ..ha-ha that said, I had a '06 E46 330ci Inline 6 and that was a huge upgrade vs smaller engine in my 2002 325ci. That said, think I may feel same w/M240 vs my former 2018 230i with same engine as the G42 230i??

I also ordered 230, yeah after it being in production, I sometime also wonder if the upgrade is worth it or not.
7000$ for xdrive and B58 engine seems worth it. I did some looking, seems like bmw is known for inline 6 engine. However this is my first bmw, so B48 is like a big upgrade for me already. |

HUD would mean little to me as I have never had it, if it is that important, wait for it to come back. But let me explain; My current 230i build is $46.1k vs the M 240i build price of 54.1k. If they remove HUD from my 230i that reduces the price by $700 to $45.4k, then if I then add the dynamic handling pkg for net price of 1,300 my 230i will be $46.7k vs $54.1k for the B58 M240i. So that means paying ~$7k for the extra 130 HP and Heads Up Display. But the 230i RWD w/M sports differential should handle great but won't be as quick as the M240ix. That said, I am older in my early 60s and don't want to have any regrets, still struggling is $7k extra worth it for the M240i w/the B58 Engine and ix drive?? hmmm.. decision is tough & I'm still on the fence

If I order a new 2 it will be a M240. I like the new tech, like the HUD. My primary reason for going with the 240 however, will be the engine.
I would not be happy with losing HUD in a 230 build, but it would not be a catalyst for me to spend 7k more. Another option is to hold off on any order for a while and wait for the chip supply chain to improve. Good luck! |

I personally don't care for the HUD in a non M car. It's not that useful as it doesn't show the gear #, at least not in my M340i. So I don't think you're missing out.
But…… the M340i xDrive is about 1.5 sec quicker to 60 than a 330i. That's substantial and translates to the G42. The 230 and M240 xDrive will be different driving experiences. If the HUD matters that much then get the one with the HUD that is the more capable car anyway. If it doesn't matter enough to spend an extra $7k or whatever, get the one you want. |

agree Transfer, thx for the comments on the HUD. I have never had one so perhaps the 230i will be ok for me at $7k less.
if 240i RWD drive was available now I may have sprung for the extra $5k since X drive adds $2k. But read here last week won't be available until maybe August 2022... The new Nissan Z interests me with 400HP & 6 speed manual but not available until Spring 2022. Plus Z forums I am on think Nissan dealers will try & mark up at least $5k above MSRP. If so, forget it

If I stick to the RWD 230i, should I add the M Sports differential pkg. for Net $1,300? (I already have the 19' wheels for $600 in my build)
Does this improve the handling of the RDW 230i??? or only if I really push the car to its limits

Solstice.. I live in S Carolina so zero need for AWD other than faster 0-60 time.
The 240i would only be $5k higher for me if not IX drive.. But no RWD drive for another 10 months. But does the M Sports Differential help with dry road cornering & grip or waste of $1,300?? and don't add to my 230i Build

My vehicle will never be tracked; therefore don’t think I need to add the M Sports Differential. I’ll save those $ for post purchase to install the chips necessary to add SiriusXM built in radio after they are available

If you are having such a hard time deciding after having already placed your order for the 230 you already have your answer. If you knew in your heart that the 230 was the right car you wouldn't be torturing yourself. You say this might be your last sporty car, so if that extra $7k isn't going to burden you then just go for the M240 and you'll be glad you did.
Disclosure, I ordered an M240 and only briefly considered the 230. |

My only real issue is paying $2k for the ix drive I do NOT need, Rather have RWD and 240i RWD is at least 10 months away. So looking like I’ll stick to my 230i build order

Couldn't agree more, I'd also rather have RWD. And, I'd also MUCH rather have a stick than the auto. But my lease was due this month so I had to move on something.
Im glad you've made your choice and are happy, I'm sure you're gonna love your 230!

Chuck thanks... I'd love a manual also but we do have a '08 Mustang GT w/stick.
Only other new Car I'd like is new 2023 Nissan Z with 400HP and manual, less price expected vs M240i. Except not available until next Spring and fears of dealer mark-ups... urgh!! That said, 230i here I come plus I'll get SiriusXM installed since the Vehicle will be still be prepped for Satellite radio and BMW providing $350 credit |

I agree the new Nissan Z is hot! I also wouldn't mind having one, I had a 91 300ZX Turbo when I was young and still miss that car. I also still have manual trans "toy" vehicles, my 981 Boxster, plus my Harley (hey auto-trans motorcycles are becoming more common), so I don't feel quite as bad.
