First MOT - advisory

Had my 128ti now for 3 years now and it went in yesterday for its first MOT. No problems as expected but advisory on the two front tyres, which are original. I always run the fronts at 38 psi as the BMW recommendation is super high at 42 psi and wear the middle of the tyre out in no time

Front two tyres were advised at 4.5mm outer edges and 2.9mm in the centre but as the car gets traded in in 4 - 8 weeks I’m not changing them given I will only do 500miles maximum

When I got home, the dealership have inflated the front tyres to 47 psi. My thoughts are they really want to destroy the centres very quickly!

That's a rarity, a Dealer checking your tyre pressures!

Typical dealer, I had that when I used to use one.

If I put the recommended pressures in the back of my G31 at 42psi (for comfort mode) which will climb to 45 - 46 when hot, I might as well go solid rubber!! If I choose full load mode it's even higher, which I have to say with run flats is bonkers IMO.

I'm at 38 psi when it tells me should have 42 and even then it will skip over rough services on a bend. Once I get my two nearside wheels repaired (if they can, potholes!), then I'm off for some go flats.

Seems the logic of * rated tyres is that they are designed to run at high pressures and thus help show good economy despite the ride and longlivity of the rubber.

Whats happened to the old school advice, that if the wear is in the middle - over inflated, wear at the edges - under inflated?

Tyre pressures are stupid high these days. My Golf R is 46psi minimum for my 19's.

Bloody tyre is only rated at 50psi! I'd never run them at that.

I think its more about CO2 emissions that manufacturers have to comply to these days rather than economy.

Absolutely! I just wonder how many people wouldn’t even bother to check, their tyres would be bald in the centre in no time!
