Even in Sport plus, the car goes back to D. In any direction that I leave my house I have between a 6 to 12% grades. Last night we came up 3,000' 10-12% grade. Car has just 100 miles on it. It kept switching back to D, then upshifting so that I'm running 1,800 rpm. Not the load I want to break it in with.

If you're trying to keep the RPMs down, stay out of sport plus. The purpose of it is to keep you in the power band.

You move the shifter over towards you (M/S). Once you use the paddles it will stay. If you come to a stop and don't downshift it will put you back to 1

2022 or 2023 version (with or without gearshift)? Above correct if you've got a lever, pullback again from D if you've got the toggle switch

You have a 2023 with the toggle shifter, to get into fully manual mode, while in D or Drive, pull the toggle shifter pack towards you again to get into S or Sport mode. The display should now saw S1, then pull either paddle shifter to get into fully manual mode, the display should not show M1. Fully manual mode will hold gears.

There it is. Thanks. Now that you mention that, I remember hitting the toggle back a second time to get it in manual mode. We are just overwhelmed with trying to learn everything.

That's what I'm trying to do. Keep the rpm higher.

You're not supposed to be keeping revs high during 1200 mile break in

Not higher than either 4000-4500. What he’s trying to do is what I’m doing in my break in. Holding rpm at different speeds (1200, 2000, 3000, 3600)a while cruising on the highway to have the engine at different rpm’s during the 1200 mile break in.

Exactly! The engine has not been over 4,000 RPM. What it was doing is short shifting too much. Going up a 12% grade at 1,800 RPM has to be lugging the engine too much for break in. It's great to know the B58 has that much grunt though.
Drove it to Dinner tonight. It held its gear.

Yea I get it, this my first automatic but here’s what I’ve learned;

The best way to ‘keep it in gear’ is to slide the shifter to the left towards you for “S” mode. Now as you accelerate you’ll need to manually pull down the shifter to hit a higher gear or it will redline. However as you come to a stop it will automatically shift to a lower gear so it doesn’t stall out which is pretty cool

I had fun with this for a few weeks but it starts feeling like a lot of work, so now I just use the paddles to drop a few gears when needed.

Seeing how they just released a manual Supra, I hope BMW releases a manual 230/240.

In the meantime please correct me or add any tips on enjoying these BMW automatics!

The magnetic paddle shifters makes shifting feel like you're playing a racing video game with a simulator. Although, my wife finds the 'clicking' annoying, so I usually reserve it for solo rides.

I have to say that getting up to speed with the G42, with I Drive 7, has been a little more of a challenge than any previous car I've owned. I actually hunted down a 2022 230i with Msport, just so I would still have a shift lever (not that it is connected to anything) and also avoid the i Drive 8, which I'm sure is great.

Getting up to speed with everything and learning all the nuances takes some time. I was jacking the car up in the garage today and didn't realize it auto locked, and in turn armed the alarm. Well, I got the car about 6" in the air when the alarm went off. Disarming the alarm was simple, but apparently disabling the alarm is not. I'm sure I'll get it sooner or later, but yikes, it almost feels like piloting the space shuttle

I do have the drive modes figured out and enjoy shifting, even though I've got no clutch, but the car is a hoot to drive. I can imagine that the M240i is an absolute beast.

I find it’s a doddle to “get up to speed”… just jam down on the pedal on the right!
