G87 M2 comparisons to G42 m240i xdrive?

I have had my G42 for a year now and love it. I have an allocation for a G87. Any comparisons would be great. I have mine specced with the Carbon seats as the only downside I have found in the G42 is lack of support with the seats.

Any feedback is appreciated

There is a review on YouTube where a Supra owner drove the M2 and commented the supra is more responsive down low while the M2 pulls harder in the upper rev range. The M240i uses the same engine and auto box as the supra and will likely be a similar comparison vs the M2.

I've owned my heavily modded G42 for over a year now and love it (
). I'm trading it on a which G87 goes into production next week.

It's like a G42++.
+40% more performance but 20% less comfort/cruiser. Depends what you value and enjoy.

these comparison points are all vs the g42 xdrive :

1. same 0-60 and 1/4 performance recorded until now
2. g87 ~50hp more to the wheel on dyno
3. g42 more responsive down low
4. better braking system on the g87
5. weight about the same for both
6. more colour options for now for the g42
7. ride comfort seems the same as both are using the same M adaptive suspension
8. very limited color options on g87 for now, given that for example darkish blue one will give this toy a much better appearance given its boxy design.

so given these and the price difference between both, I would suggest you wait to at least until 07/2024 when the switchover to MY2025 to see if at least there will be more color options available and for the future g87 iterations (LCI/Comp/CS).

Thanks everyone for your posts. I am more interested in the driving dynamics. I work from home and use my car primarily as a weekend canyon/mountain driver. My G42 is also a G42+ as I have tried to improve the handling of the car using performance springs and spacers. I am just wondering if the G87 does a better job of hiding the weight.

I am surprised that the rear wheel drive G87 weighs the same as the G42 xdrive. I am spoiled by owning a couple Porsche's (2020 GT4 and 997.2 on KW V3's).

I am hoping someone tells me "The G87 handles much better and the steering is much better then the G42". Either way I have an order in and for I have the car optioned as light as possible and am 99% certain I will take the car when it comes in.

First, why arent we comparing apples to apples and go with the G87 vs G42 M240 Sdrive (RWD)?

I dont agree with some of your basic assessments.

I have the 23 M240 RWD but not the G87 yet so cant make comments to both based on my direct knowledge. However, based on what we know on paper, the suspension is superior on the G87. I will wait to comment on comfort although the M240 Vernasca seat is nothing special (in comparison to the sport seat in the G87). The G87 has far more available adjustments to enhance the driving and suspension. You state 50 more hp, where did the G42 M240 dyno at 410hp? By the factory numbers, torque is 405 on the G87 vs 369 on the M240 (yes, the B58 is a little better at low end but the G87 has the ability to make adjustments...and I am truly curious to see how they both act after the G87 break in and tweaking the M adjustments). Personally, I hate the sunroof, the cf roof is a big plus and upgrade. The stance is wider on the G87 which is a plus.

Since looks and colors are subjective (yes, I sure wish the individual colors option was available on the G87 but other than TNM, which I have on my M240, the M240 colors are nothing soecial either), I am not making this part of the discussion. Same goes to body style.

Look, end of the day, this horse has been beaten to death multiple times. Whether comparing to F87C, G42 M240, G80/82, its all a personal decision to me made by each individual. There is enough information for someone to read, watch and listen to for the choice to be made.

Until more handling review comparisons between the two will come, I would dare to say the handling feel is the same after Misha's G42 Nurburgring test on this video, on stock suspension ! I would suggest you to watch it if you didnt already

Thanks for your thoughts and I agree with everything you said. I started this post because I own a G42 xdrive and have a G87 on order with the carbon package. I guess I am hoping that someone who also owned a G42 has picked up the G87 and can give me comments. I am sure there will be plenty of comparisons in the near future and hope there post them here.

I have had the M240i for a month and the G87 I picked up a few days ago. It was a blast to drive since the All sessions tires allowed me to do slides in the snow, and the car would fix itself. The lower-end torque on the B58 is a better engine for daily in urban cities, and the torque kicks in earlier, allowing you to maneuver around the traffic faster. The seats are the same, and I am surprised there is no surround view, while cars with B58 all have this standard, I believe. I love this option as it helps me park in tight spaces more effortlessly. But the flagship 2 series doesn't have it? Don't worry, the new M2 is very punchy after you rev it up, and you can feel the power differences. It steers better than the M240i Xdrive. The suspension on the M2 also feels more sophisticated than the standard two series. I need to drive the car more to compare.

Yeah, the M240 has the 360 camera but the G87 does not. I agree, that is a bummer.

I am not sure (as I dont have the G87) about the seats, are you sure they are the exact same in both cars (not referring to the cf buckets)?

Also, I will be curious to see the torque difference in the RWD M240 vs the G87. Did you make any adjustments in the M2 settings to see if you can improve the low end (compared to the M240)?

Thanks you so much. This is what I have been waiting to hear. The steering on the xdrive is a little numb. I was hoping the M2 would fix the steering. I am sure I will add the adjustable sport springs and that will make the M2 even better.

The G42 M240i xDrive is an excellent car. The only reason you should be buying a G87 M2 over it as a road/weekend car is the manual transmission (or you just want to pay for the M badge).

I've been wanting to say this but felt it would not go over well.

If the m240i came in a manual I'd already have it.

Which is exactly why BMW will never put a 6MT on the G42 M240i. It's just too easy for someone to step down, save $10,000-15,000, and get 90% of the performance and fun. Sometimes I even question my own M2 allocation, specially every time I get yet another news alert about interest rate hikes. The negative response to the manual gearbox from reviewers is giving me even more hesitation. I'll be driving a HEA car with the 8AT later today and honestly if I'm not blown out of the water right away, someone else will be getting an early Christmas present.

I also would have likely bought a M240i (RWD) if it had a manual. That being said.. there ARE other differences, so it's not JUST transmission and a badge. It's gonna come down to what you value.

The CLAR platform is legit, and some reviews say the G87 has superior turn-in feel compared to the M4. If that's true, it's probably also better than the m240. It's also just more planted, which can be a positive or negative.

iDrive8 adds stuff, M adds more. Adaptive suspension; the new (to the 2 series) 0-10 traction settings. Drift computer. M styled graphics and M stuff like shift lights (both in dash and on hud). I dont think the M240 has any of this?

The S58 is a big deal. While the S58 pulls "weaker" at the top end, that's relative to itself, not other engines. Even at the low end it's not actually LOSING to S55/B58 equipped cars in 0-60 (stock to stock OFC). Since you (the OP) are no stranger to modding, you should factor in that the S58 has a lot of headroom you can take advantage of.

Likewise the CLAR is the "platform of now and the future," which at least in theory means there is and will continue to be a more robust aftermarket community. If you are in it for the long term, it's not nothing!

None of these are "mic-drop" reasons to prefer one or the other. But the G42 and G87 have lots of differences other than transmission, is all I'm sayin.

The euro spec M240i has a very identical seat to the M2, if not the same. NA spec seats are less attractive, but the M2 has the fancy glow like the F87
and it looks more premium. I haven't played with the settings yet. Sport seems to be more responsive for sure. S58 delivers torque at a higher RPM, while B58 has a lovely early low-end torque to pass on cars and stuff.

I sgree and the differences in the G87 make it superior over the G42 M240, IMO. Hopefully by mid to late summer I will own both (and both 8ATs and both RWD).

Also, do ALL G cars, including the G42, use 5x112 offsets? If the G42 is 5x120, that would be a small long-term downside.

Edit: looked it up myself, it's 5x112, so all good there.
