Please help me decide between a 2023 M2 vs 2024 M440i as I can not decide for myself.
The following are my current thoughts. Please let me know what your personal thoughts are and/or why you would choose one over another. Currently I don’t drive a sport/sport-like car, so either of BMW’s come off sporty to me. I do understand the M2 will provide raw power, whereas M440i will not. I don’t know where either of the cars stand in terms of handling and those sort of criteria. I am leaning towards M440i for purely looks as I think it looks a lot more elegant than the M2. However, I know the M440i lacks the power of an M2. I guess it comes down to whether I want looks or speed, or both if you guys suppose the M2 posses that. The current wait times for M2 and M440i are 2 years and no wait time, respectively. I am looking for a daily driver, but I also want to go fast! Any thoughts you have are greatly appreciated. Addendum: After reflecting some more on y’all’s comments and my own priorities, I have a few comments to add as to why I’m still leaning towards the M440i X-drive with MPE. I have test driven a 2024 M440i but not a 2023 M2, so my comments may be biased and/or unsubstantiated. As always, feel free to comment your thoughts. Speed: I have no plan to track the cars. Even if I did purchase M2, I can only go so fast on public roads. I understand handling and all that comes with an M2 in that regard may be better, but I feel that it may be not needed given the above. The M440i was exhilarating, but I don’t think I’ll be consistently driving over 90 mph. Again, I may be completely wrong having not tested a M2. Utility: I am in my early 20’s. I have no plan to have kids any time soon as I hope to matriculate into graduate school within the next year hopefully. I have no significant other either, so it’ll be just me and my belongings. The M440i’s interior is larger than the M2 in which I’m indifferent about given my smaller stature. I am looking for a ride that can go when I want it to, so it seems the M440i is sufficient. Looks: M2 comes off as “sport-only,” whereas the M440i combines luxury and sport. I do agree M2 looks more aggressive and bulkier than the M440i. However, I feel that the tail of the M2 is cut short and not as proportional so that gives it a unique look, but not one that I would select 100% of the time. Similarly, many oppose the M440i’s front grill but in my opinion it also sets the car apart without losing its proportions. In the long run, I believe I will continue to enjoy the M440i’s looks as opposed to M2. |

OK, I have general advice. I also apply it to carbon fiber bike frames, heavy power tools, and 3d printers*.
If you have to ask, then the enthusiast option is not for you. Choose the more mainstream, less extreme option. Get the M440. I only recommend pure M cars to people who want to invest into that lifestyle. Otherwise you are wasting 90% of the car's potential (and your own money). There's no shame in getting an M440! Get used to the more mainstream car, and if you outgrow it, then jump into a pure M car. *oh, and Porsches. |

If you’re not going to track the car, there’s no point in buying the full fledged M version. The full fledged M cars really feel different at the limit and approaching the limit.

If you can afford both, the only reasons to go with the M440, in my opinion, would be for the larger back seats and xDrive. And if more usable back seats are what you want, the m340 is a much better option. The M2 will certainly be faster, handle much better, hold its value better, looks cooler (IMO), is a truly special car and the best value luxury sports car (with the CT4 Blackwing) under $70k. The m440 is a very nice car, and certainly plenty of car for a vast majority of people wanting to go fast, but its not an M2 or an M4. As someone mentioned before, I'd be looking at even an m240 over an m440 all day long.

I’ve had both. The M440i is actually a fabulous car. Supreme daily, with all the amenities and performance for that use case that you could want. I’d actually take it over an M240i as I too prefer the looks of the bigger car.
Financially, it’s the wrong move. An M440i optioned to provide a better experience than a 2-Series will cost more than an M2, which is unfathomable and untenable to me. The M440i will depreciate much faster than either the M240i or M2. The only plus is that you can probably get 10% off the MSRP of an in-stock M440i. The performance delta between the M440i and M2 is massive. Much faster past 30mph (the B58 does great off the line), with significantly better handling. Way flatter cornering, way more grip. My subjective opinion is that the M2 looks significantly better and more special, especially in Zandvoort Blue. If you need a car right away, your decision is already made for you. The M2 is absolutely worth the wait. |

I was (sort of) in your position 5 years ago. I found a used M235 shortly after the release of the M2.
Being taller, and often having to carry large loads for work, I purchased the 235 as a ‘try before you buy’ as I went on the waitlist for the M2. I was happy with the car. I fitted in it, it carried everything I needed it to. But I wanted that little bit //More. So 6 months later my spot came up, and I traded for the true M. If I were in your place, I’d put my name on the M2 list, and order / find a lightly used M440. Then, if you’re not quite happy with the performance / handling (both will be far better in the M2) and you can lose a little room, trade when your number comes up. |
