Seal Misalignment

Took delivery of the car today, excellent overall experience. One little item the dealer has noted down and is going to follow up on is a bit of a gap between the sealing strip and the front lip. Nothing is broken, scraped, distorted or apparently incorrectly fitted. The sealing strip seems to follow a different curvature than the back of the lip, it is tight at either end and most open in the middle (see the areas I have circled in yellow). Has anyone else seen this with their car?

My guess is the bumper wasn’t put on properly and needs to be adjusted.

We checked that, but seemed OK, may more likely be the oil cooler position, but couldn’t see if that was the case without some disassembly. They are going to do a technical query and see what the answer is, then rectify it when I bring it in for the 2,000km service in a month or so.

You don't want the dealership to put a buffer on your car. Before car arrives at the dealership, everyone should nake it clear with everyone you can at the dealership that hand wash ONLY and DO NOT put the buffer on the car (unless you like swirls or other potential paint issues). I would also recommend telling them no nitrofil in the tires and you aren't paying for it.

Looking at the gap to the oil cooler in your photo, it is the gap from the sealing strip to the oil cooler that is incorrect, so it looks like the strip itself is out of position and hasn’t been flexed enough, as opposed to a bumper position issue.

Why wouldn’t you nitrofil?

Any purported benefits do not outweigh the costs. For those changing rims, you are throwing money out the window with your car purchase.

I’m confused, there’s no gap in the fitment in my car. I was showing you how the weather stripping is sitting right, where yours has a gap in between, and I guess the gap in your car is caused by the bumper being mounted too far forward.

DIstance should have been a better term as opposed to gap, it looks as though your strip overall is further forward relative to the oil cooler, but it may just be the different photo angles. Looking underneath my bumper it is all even and centred on the mounting holes with a consistent gap to the bracing components underneath. It seems to be the sealing strip that is too far back relative to the oil cooler, it has 2 clips that engage to hold it forward, but with no adjustment. There is also an aluminium mounting bar underneath the seal, this may be the component that may be out of position.

Maybe the sealing strip was torqued a little bit when the protective plastic was removed by the dealer, but I fiddled around in feeding the rubber seal under the bumper lip a bit and it seems to be in the right position now. The backing strip the seal is attached to is quite flexible, so it seemed to be a bit rotated and held out of position by the rubber. All good now, I think:

I need to give this a look today. Mine is how yours looked. Hoping I can get it to sit correctly.

The gloss black trim piece in the middle of the bumper opening does come off… maybe that piece can be fiddled with to gain better fitment.
