Driver's window

Ok, so imagine you've been driving with your windows down.

You park, engine still running, in park, park brake on. Open driver's door and then put up both windows, pressing both window switches and releasing.

Passenger window goes straight up, driver's does not. WHY NOT?!
Why won't the driver's window one-touch up when the door is open?!
I sat for 10 minutes digging in iDrive 8 trying to find a setting.

Frameless window problems, I assume its because the window needs to index when closed and if it autos up it cant really do that and could break the glass when you shut the door.

Are your windows tinted? Mine gets "stuck" when trying to one-touch also. I figured it was because of aftermarket window tint film. My truck does the same thing.

If your door is closed amd that's happening you probably need to retrain the auto up. If rolling it up and down a couple times doesnt do it the dealer has a procedure to fix it. Unless you have insanely thick tint or it's coming off you should be fine.

When the door is closed, the window behaves and does one touch up and down. When the door is open, the window won’t one touch up.

So nothing to do with tints.

Yes, likely because of the frameless windows for one reason (limitation) or another.

My MINI Coupe has frameless windows and because of that does not have the one touch up functionality that other MINIs of the same generation (with framed windows) have. I believe because of a lack of a frame to house a safety sensor to stop the window if an object/hand is detected.

In the case of the MINI, there’s no one touch up whether the door is open or not. With the 2 Series it seems the limitation is just when open because of the slight window movement when the door is opened/closed, so it shouldn’t go all the way up. So a little smarter than my 10 year old MINI, but still one of the limitations in common.

When you open a door, notice how the window opens a half inch or so. After you close the door again, then it goes up the last half inch. That's so that it makes a good seal against the rubber/plastic/whatever.

I guess if the door is open it could go up until that last half inch then stop until the door is closed. But auto close takes it all the way up, so they would either have to change the auto close to detect if the door is open, or just stop auto close while the door is open which was probably easier.

It’s nothing to do with the small drop which is created not only to ensure a good seal with the rubber on the car but also releases air pressure allowing the door to close without shattering the glass. The small drop is maintained when the window is closed and the door is open.

The reason you have to hold the window button is partly because the anti trap mechanism won’t work as with an open door, there is nothing to create resistance between the window and car frame. It’s also because the curve of the window narrows the door opening so potentially you could get trapped between the closing window and the car.

You may be aware a double press on the fob when unlocking the car lowers the drivers window half way to give more space when entering the car.

IIRC this is a 'safety feature'...had it on ALL the BMW's with frameless windows that I've owned, thru 840Ci, Z4, M435i, M440i MHT & M240i.

It'll go up alright, but you have to hold the switch. Close the door and it's fine...

Can confirm, this can be re-coded.

I used BimmerCode, and now the drivers window goes up all the way, one-touch, while the door is open.

Can also confirm that it only goes up to the ‘drop height’ which prevents the window from shattering when closing the door. 😏
