Autocross woes
Hi All,
I was auto crossing my 335i6 (198k miles now!) for the second time, and unfortunately lost my upper radiator hose right in the beginning of the event. The weird thing is it appears my alternator pulley contacted the hose and made the hole. I've replaced the hose, but am concerned about the same thing happening again. Is this a sign my engine mounts are gone? I have a video of the run where the hose failed, but hard to tell when exactly it occurred (except later when the rear end all of a sudden had very little grip and I almost spun). I've done a cursory search and haven't seen other threads on this topic, so apologies if it has already been discussed. Thanks, Lucas (Side note: RMS is leaking pretty badly now, so have to decide whether or not to tackle myself) |

Stock/original motor mounts? If so, its possible that there was enough movement of the engine to make contact. That's definitely an issue for slinging belts, I would think it would have to be bad to make contact with a hose. Your hose could have just been worn too. I would consider changing the mounts regardless if they are stock at that mileage.

Should I stick with the stock replacements, or go for an upgrade? Car is Stage 1+, but was on a stock map for the autoX. Thanks! |

If you're doing the pulleys/tensioner thru FCP, which you probably want to if there's ANY oil near that area, then get the aluminum PS pulley too from ECS. It won't shatter like the plastic one, and shred your belt on the subframe. |

Was thinking I'd do belts as preventative maintenance, and the aluminum PS pulley sounds like a good idea. I want this car to be as reliable as possible because I can't fix it when I'm at school/on ski team trips to VT, etc. On the plus side, I just got $14k in maintenance records from the PO's mechanic from the last five years (40k miles), so that's nice to see. Here's a photo from the autocross, before the radiator hose let go: Last edited by HighMile335i; 10-14-2020 at 11:18 PM.. |
