Yeah agree.. the primary use for 99% of buys of both these cars is street use. I wouldn't make a lot of sense to do a completely track focused comparison, before this video any way.

I always compared the M2 to a 911 base. They are similar size and 2+2 seating. The 911 Base has less power, but is also 500 lbs lighter. The Cayman is more compared to a Z4/Supra GR. It's obvious price can't be considered in the comparison because Porsche is far more money.

I've had a 987.2 Cayman S before and I found it rather mundane for street use. It was not exciting unless you were wringing it out. On track, it was an all-star, my favorite track car I have owned. So nimble and rewarding to drive.

From behind my keyboard and not having driven these exact cars, just comparing my F87 and 987.2 ownership experience, I would hands down take the M2 for a street car or all-in-on daily driver/track use (how I use my F87). The Cayman would be a better fit as a second car that saw a lot of track use, and clearly hold it's value better.

I think it depends on what you’re looking for.

The base 992 is an excellent car, but much more GT-ish / refined in nature, which is totally fine if that’s what you’re after.

if my M2 comp had been naturally aspirated, I would still have it and wouldn't have got my 718 GTS 4.0...true story

I loved that car, had an emotional connection to its bulldog looks and playful handling, it's really just the drivetrain of the 4.0 that got me, the better manual combined with that naturally aspirated BIG flat six just has a viscerality and emotion to it that a turbo engine can never match for me anyways.

The e9x M3 was this for me, and even better with the V8. But I digress.
The M2 is almost half the price now of the GTS, which is incredible.
Around here the new base 718 is over $90k, S over $100k, and GTS pushing $120k.

E9x M3 is the best M car ever made IMO, I’d love to own another one at some point. Perfect balance of old and new with a properly special engine, which in retrospect only looks better and better. BMW could certainly build an NA engine again, they were up there with the best, but emissions regs and the accountants ended that possibility a long time ago. The current B58/S68 are respectively very impressive engines and top of the class for turbo lumps. For price / performance / engineering / quality / practicality the current M2 is really in a class of its own.

Seems to me, who knows far less than the enthusiasts posting here, a comparison between 2 entirely different cars (turbo vs normal aspirated, mid-engine vs front engine, $65K vs $95K+, etc.) is somewhat wasted time if not for the clicks it’s obviously registering.

But what do I know?

It’s so interesting how different we can all be.

I always felt like the V8 in the E92 was a bit of a “lazy” revving machine, as opposed to the straight 6 in the E46 M3 / Z4MC. Those cars always seemed more frantic to me, and in a good way.

But can absolutely respect the love for the last N/A M car too.

Yeah and that is what got me to go after the M2. Nothing wrong with getting an awesome car new and have some money in your bank account...win win.

100%. The crazy thing about all the regulations and engine development is I am achieving about the same MPG in my G80 manual as I did in my e93 DCT. Ok it’s about 1 mpg better if I’m being honest… but in spite of the marginal benefit and performance I’d take the NA.

Better low end to midrange in lower gears for sure. If only BMW made an S54 with 414bhp

S54 is a great engine - quick revving. Of course a NA V8 will feel sluggish at low revs but that engine was a monster at speed and accelerated toward the 8300 redline ferociously. I liked both engines but the s65 was really special and I’d take it any day over the S54. Anyone can get in the e46 and feel fast. But the e9x had a learning curve. I called it my poor man vantage.

Quite a lot of cross shopping between these two.. the comparison makes sense.

Makes sense in your opinion. People talk a good game but the comparison is valid only for clicks.

The cars are completely different.

I failed to mention 2 seats vs 4 seats so add that one.

Apples and oranges if you please.

'My opinion' -- based on the tens of thousands of views the comparison has gotten in a day. Why would it generate clicks in the absence of interest. That is literally how it works.

By the way.. in case you ever wondered what the two most commonly crossed shopped fruits in the developed world were... apples and oranges.

Ok Sparky believe what you wish. The review generated precisely what it intended. There’s no statistics on actual buyers, just clicks.

Move on, you have to be right, fine.

For the record, the most common shopped fruits are bananas, apples, and grapes. Touche’
