Post M2 CS winter testing with its big brother

Carscoops: 2025 BMW M2 CS And M4 CS Play Cat And Mouse On Frozen Lake

Disclaimer: The article states the M2 CS will get both AT and MT which is not accurate. The M2 CS will only be offered with the AT. They also 'speculate' how much power the M2 CS will get.

Why is BMW releasing a CS so early in the M2’s lifecycle? Shouldn’t it come near the end?

The entire G87 lifecycle is 2023 to 2029. The M2 CS will be in production from 08/25 to 07/26.

That's still pretty early, but good none the less. At my decent income level I simply want to see an AWD comp version soon.

Compared to the F87, but not when compared to the G80/2.
  • M3/M3C/M4/M4C: SOP 11/2020
  • M3CX/M4CX: SOP 07/2021
  • M3 CSL: 07/2022
  • M3 CS: SOP 03/2023 - EOP 02/2024
  • M4 CS: SOP 07/2024
It might indicate that they possibly have a placeholder for a CSL later on. There won't be an AWD model anytime soon. LCI is not due until calendar year 2026. That's the earliest I can see them offering an M xDrive model but not guaranteed. We also have no word on a Comp model yet. My guess is when they do offer AWD it will be a Comp model but that's just speculation.

That's what I was getting at.

Seeing as the F87 CS was launched near the end of the F87's lifecycle, the fact that the G87 CS is coming out next year, four years before the model bows out, might suggest that something even more special is in the pipeline.

As a manual enthusiast myself, I am somewhat happy to hear that I don’t even have to think about trading my current G87 manual for the CS variant as there is no manual.

In your opinion as you seem like the go-to source for all things G87 future related, aside from the MY25+ models coming- do you see any other variants with manuals? Such as a competition? Or do you think they will simply bump 20hp and run that into the LCI and discontinue the manual before EOL of the G87?

I’m hoping I just don’t get FOMO come 2026+ when they drop a new LCI manual or something even better.

I’d love to know your opinion and foreseeable future mindset on the manual program for the G87.

Unless they do something like the 3.0 CSL, which is highly unlikely and would be far out of reach to most, I don't foresee any other variant coming with MT. Look no further than the base M3/4; they've stubbornly remained at 473hp/406ft-lbs since they debut four years ago and the base M4 LCI that just went into production also remains unchanged. It simply comes down to the MT not being able to handle the extra torque for BMW to warranty it. IMO, if anyone sitting on the fence wants an M2 with MT just get one now unless you are waiting on more colors for MY25 or want the updates that come with LCI.

As always, you can refer to Known future G87 models... for the latest info on upcoming G87 models.

Appreciate it! I’m glad about that tbh.

Thankful to have you as knowledgeable as you are on the new updates!

It's hard to tell from the still images, but are the front tires kicking snow back or just picking it up? AWD???

Likely just throwing the snow out of the tread, the way winter tyres typically work to keep the tread clean and present clean sipes to the snow. Usually with dry compactable snow, you will see just as much snow deposited in the front wheel wells of RWD cars as in the rear.

Good observation. The G80 M3 CS as well as the upcoming M4 CS both have M xDrive, so it would make sense that the M2 CS will get it as well. This also lines up with the rumored news that the G87 will get M xDrive sometime in calendar year 2026.

aerobod's right on this one. This is similar to driving in the rain or on wet pavement, you always get water splatter behind the front wheels as the tires kick up the water or in this instance, the powdery snow, making it look like the front wheels are driven.

Cool that the G87 is getting a CS version, boo that it's an AT. That's a no go for me. Glad I'm driving my car and not afraid of making modifications either. If it was a CS, I would think twice about suspension upgrades and shit.

According to BMWBLOG's sources it is indeed RWD.

RWD and 8-Speed Auto

The decision to make the M2 CS exclusively rear-wheel drive, despite rumors of an xDrive variant, underscores BMW’s commitment to driving purity. The headline for many, however, is the significant power increase, with the 2025 BMW M2 CS expected to produce around 522 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This power boost promises exhilarating performance in a compact package, further solidified by the choice to offer only an automatic transmission.
