Cross Shopping

Just curious what cross shopping did you do before deciding on the M2?

I originally had a deposit on a 2023 ZL1 but the dealers couldn’t secure an allocation and then the 2024 models had a price increase. M2 checks off all the boxes for me expect maybe missing that V8 sound, but my previous Supra sounded really good with aftermarket exhaust.

I cross shopped a few different Porsche 911 years/models, and the F87 M2 competition. I really wanted to stick with a turbo motor as well for the low to mid range grunt (last car was an F series M240i). Researching Porsche's that drew me to the 2017/2018 991.2 911's (2017 they started putting turbos in all 911 models) but even the base Carrera model was $70k for a higher mileage option and you don't get any warranty. Then for the F87 competitions a low mileage one is still selling for $57 to $65K so why not just buy a new M2 for $65K? That was my thought process.

I drove:
3 C8s
2 base 718 boxsters
1 4.0 GTS Cayman
1 Emira (so great but it bumped +$15k and delivered cars are proving to be schit shows)
Driving my first M2 Saturday, hoping to order a ‘25 this fall, crossing my fingers it’ll be xdrive
If we got m3 tourings or RS3 hatches, I’d buy one of those

Was considering a slightly used or CPO G80. Don't really need the back seats & could get a brand new M2 optioned exactly the way I wanted for less $.

My case is a little different. I had planned on getting a M2, but I got a 718 Cayman GT4 instead.

Lots of reasons why I changed, I still love the M2, but driving the GT4 is an experience I couldn't replicate with any other car (save for a GT3)

Yeah I’ve had a 21 Supra, TRX, and a CT4-V BW and I miss the Supra the most. The B58 with high flow cat and aftermarket catback sounded amazing. Really hoping I can get a similar sound out of the S58. After having the Supra and my wife’s X3 M40i, I’m really looking forward to the S58

At around $70K for brand new cars, there is not whole lot of cars that compete against M2. If you can afford additional $30K and don't mind 2 seaters, Cayman/Boxter GTS 4.0 will show a different level of driving experience.

If I were looking for a used car, I would look for 981 Boxter/Cayman GTS from 2015+ for around $50K.

I agree. It’s arguably the best new car to buy for 70k and I’m all for it.

I didn’t cross shop. I bought the M2 to help spread miles out amongst my cars.

I would have been interested in the CT5-V Blackwing 6 speed, but they were all $95 - $110k, and no dealer would let me test drive one.

Even the CT4-V Blackwings were more expensive when I made my decision.

Now that I've had the G87 for 3 months I have ZERO REGRETS!

I was all set to get a used G80 manual, test drove a bunch and then saw some g87 HEA cars at some dealers, liked them and test drove a used one and figured I could get a new M2 for the price of a used G80 that had 30k miles on it. Plus I liked the idea of a 2 door.

This will be my first M car but I’ve always been a fan since the E36 was new. I’ve been driving modified Subaru STis since 07. Still have my 2020 and M2 should be here Friday. I love the potential of the S58 when I eventually get some power mods.

I also looked at and considered other manual transmission cars:
GT350
Darkhorse
Mach1
Supra manual

Depends on how you option the M2, I think the price is pretty similar to the CT4VBW. But I think the M2 takes it on performance and quality. I did enjoy my BW but I think the M2 will be more special. I plan on keeping this one a while and just slowly modding it so I don’t get bored of it too quickly.

I really wanted a GT4, but they discontinued it.

Next best would be the GTS 4.0, but the markups on those are outrageous out here from what I've heard. Even if they weren't, I don't want to pay $100k+ for a car right now.

As others have mentioned, I'm not sure there is another car that really brings what the M2 brings for the money. That was true with the F87 as well.

Honestly I wasn’t cross shopping for anything. I wasn’t even looking to get a new car! I work from home and don’t really have a hobby unfortunately (besides running and watching sports). I’ve been a huge racing fan boy my whole life. Everything from F1, rally, LeMans, and in between was always a passion, but for some reason I just never pulled the trigger on my own toy.

I’m 29 y/o and I was in a 2022 Audi A5 before this just to have a decent car to get around town in. Before that was a base model Mercedes C300.

Long story short- my best friend got a 2024 M2 compulsively and dared me to “jump off the bridge also”, thinking I wouldn’t. Well- lots of money spent later, here we are! I called his dare and I’m now the father of a 6MT 2024 G87.

Best decision of my life. I now have an excellent hobby and have been meeting really cool people. I can’t stay out of my car for more than a few hours.

My girlfriend might leave me for how much time I spend talking about my car or going on drives. Her loss.

She’s in her break in service now and getting alignment done. Dropped her off at noon today so don’t get her back till tomorrow. I guess I have to just spend time with my girlfriend in the mean time? Oh well.

I loved how last gen looked and was looking at the F87 burnt orange but it was asking for $60k with 30k mile.
Saw the release picture of the G87 and didn't like it.

After seeing the G87 in person, changed my mind and got the ZB G87 and cannot be happier.

I daily this and need to fit two children in the back, otherwise I would be looking at the Cayman.

RS3 - but I felt claustrophobic inside (I'm 6 4)
Supra - I was buying my son his first car (Corolla hatch) and if the sales rep would have made a better deal for both cars, id probably never have met you fine people.

A blessing in disguise though. I absolutely love the g87.

I cross shopped the F87C, the G80, the ZL1 1LE, the CT4 BW, and a few 991s both .1 and .2. The g87 worked best for my needs, usable back seats but still small and sporty with a properly modern interior. Still kinda want a 1LE, that thing was an absolute monster. G80 was nice, may step up if I need extra room, but it did feel huge.

Looks like I'm in good company as a lot of folks here were looking at the same Porsche models or other cars I also had or looked at, and did not like.
I just couldn't justify Porsche markup or wait times at the end, when its close to twice the cost of the G87 M2.

I had driven just about everything in the $35k-80k range including the last gen M2. Though some new stuff has come out and I haven't kept up with everything.

I liked the F87 M2 but couldn't find one in a spec I could live with so I waited and bought, sold, and drove other stuff. When it was time to start looking again the G87 was a shorter wait time then anything else I thought I could live with. Plus the interior seemed to be a big step up from F87 and Supra.

I actually placed orders for both the M2 and the Cadillac CT4-v Blackwing and I'm waiting on both. I like the M2 a little more (although I've never driven one) because the Caddy feels a little too much like my 2019 Camaro to be $25k more expensive.

Buuuuuttttt Car and Driver just awarded the Caddy another 10-best in a class that (presumably) compared it directly to the M2 https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...4-v-blackwing/

I would love to see a direct comparison but that doesn't seem likely. Online reviewers seem determined to compare the M2 to the Supra, Civic Type R, and other cars that aren't similar. Or, to cars that are MUCH more expensive (Cayman GT4). Throttle house compared it to the RS3 but I have no interest in AWD either. Guess the only Rwd, small, manual transmission cars of the era will go on without a comparison.
