I recently inquired with a BMW master technician as to what he believes a sunroof weights within a BMW. The following is the answer I received via text.

“Cassette and glass prob 60, roof metal with structural support prob another 100lbs, carbon roof prob 3lbs, plus glue….”

Edit, when I inquired if anyone would ever notice the weight savings of the CF roof given what the G87 weighs, the simple answer was “No!”

So legit over 100lbs savings??? $2600 is so so worth it for the weight savings and amazing aesthetics

Where can you get that? I’ve been looking at 2017-2019 C2 GTS yesterday and they cheapest I could find was $122k.

I truly am interested.

Perhaps the Racetrack package is for Cup 2 tires. Time will tell.
I was thinking some tires as well. I'd like the HUD to be added 😆 or whatever other options I choose to be included.

I don't care honestly for me this is the first new car that I'm actually getting to configure from scratch almost exactly how I'd want it.

Only thing I hate is that I'm compromising on the color.

I'd do an orange or Isle of Man Green or darker blue if available.

Exactly! It would have to be an early 991.1 with above average miles to land a manual C2 or C2S at his suggested price.

I hear ya. I want orange as well and like you, I am willing to pay for it.

Tell him don't quit his day job… Oh wait 😟

So the sunroof option adds 163lbs to the vehicle.. Oh right, plus the glue..

Real sneaky of BMW to keep that under wraps.. I'm surprise vehicles with sunroofs doesn't topple over on the side when turning from that weight on top. 😗

It's really cute how much some of you guys love carbon fiber, I wouldn't be surprise if some of you try to make sweet love to the plastic resin 😂 J/k

Let's just kill the sunroof talk and settle on people like what they like.

Saw one locally here in Miami a few weeks back via private seller asking $85K, car new was $100k. Seen others with more miles listed before but not certified pre-owned; which makes a $$ difference. Not too much inventory right now of anything, new or old.

The GTS is the sweet spot of the Cayman lineup. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd consider a new one. Waiting is months though.

I take credit in it, especially given that he is a tech with 25+ years of experience. When you have the training and factory accreditation yourself let me know.

That's insane, I would've guesstimated around a 40-50lb difference between a CF roof and steel roof w/ sunroof. I'm not going to track this car so I'm not hung up on how much it weighs but that's significant. Can't wait to see some results of a G87 w/ CF roof vs a G87 w/ a sunroof on a scale

This seems awfully low to me as well...even for a 991.1

EDIT - he was talking about 981s, not 991s....now I understand.

It's about roughly a 30 lbs difference sunroof to steel roof..

30lb difference just between the sunroof assembly and CF insert, not the entire roof. I would imagine the weight difference between an entire CF roof vs an entire steel roof w/o a sunroof is in the neighborhood of around 5-10lbs maybe? So with a steel roof w/ sunroof, subtract close to half of that due to the cutout for the sunroof, take that number and my guess the weight difference in this case for an entire CF roof vs a steel roof w/ sunroof would've been around 33-35lbs?

You also have to factor in that this was done on a 135i which I'm sure has a smaller sunroof assembly than the G42/G87. I wouldn't be surprised if the sunroof assembly on the G series weighed closer to 50lbs.

Still, saving close to 50lbs up top is pretty decent

Yea I took all that into account, for expedience, I said roughly 30lbs..

Regardless, on a vehicle weighting about same as an old school M5, the measly added mass of a sunroof is not going to make a speck of difference in its performance, no matter how you slice it.

I am now convinced that BMW purposely makes their new cars heavier so we need to spend money on weight reduction. The price for the carbon fiber package is crazy high!

BMW will eventually have to modify the package because they will not be to selling a whole lot of them.

Its because of the new Modular CLAR architecture, BMW will try to convince you its a good thing and for your benefit for structural rigidity but really it is only a cost saving measure for the OEMs, nothing more.
