Unless you are the same age as me, have the same driving record as me, live in the same zip code as me, etc. what does it matter what I am paying for insurance?

How much is your homeowners insurance? I live in SW Florida. We have hurrianes. My homeowners insurance is high. I need to have flood insurance. Someone in Kansas doesn't. Same relevance as asking what somone's car insurance rates are.

Just had a shocker today after trying to get the new car on my insurance for next Tuesday.

They quoted me £10k (this is with the mods listed)

Turns out without a tracker installed its going to be mental prices.

With a tracker its the same price as my existing car.

My insurance are selling me an approved tracker for £99 per year that i install myself and dont pay for the box. Phew!

Haha. The list of mods would automatically put the premium sky high for a “tick the boxes” insurer.
Initially when I got my car, because they were so rare, the insurance companies had no basis of risk on them so wouldn’t quote.
That situation seems to have moved on tho.

Guess we can thank the environmental bunch (EVs) for upping the claims costs resulting in higher premiums .

That quote was with adrian flux who insure my highly modified E46

TBF without any mods i could get £570 from the “tick the boxes” insurance companies (which is still higher than adrian flux with a tracker)

That’s surprising from Flux. For reference I was under £400 but there are so many factors it’s an irrelevant reference

After seeing this thread I checked my rates and just assumed USAA was giving me the best rate. I got a quote from Progressive and it was cut in half. Bye bye USAA

What does the tracker track - I assume your driving speeds?

I can't imagine what my rates would be if they tracked me in and around the mountains/canyons of New Mexico and Arizona a couple weeks ago!

I've been doing quotes today too. Got quoted £2500 by Direct Line and LV (WTAF - I paid £650 last year for my F82 M4). Aviva quoted me £750 online for the 240 so that's probably where I'm going to go if I can get them to actually answer the phone. Still going to phone around a few more though. Leafy London suburbia with premiums to match before anyone asks.

No I meant is it because you haven't got a tracker, that's what I came up against, without it the process were crazy.

Adrian flux do a tracker for £95 / year with no cost for the box (that's really good price) and my insurance including that came to about £550

TBH I didn't even think of a tracker and the Aviva premium is about what I thought it would be given I'm in London. Having seen your post it strikes me that the direct line and LV quotes are because there was no tracker.

I was going to give Adrian Flux a call tomorrow although I wouldn't have the first idea how to fit a tracker so that may prove a bridge too far.

Well I definitely qualify as an idiot.

That would be excellent if you could do that. Thanks.

Does tracker monitor your acceleration and other driving habits? Might as well trade your M240i for a van.

No, the devices being discussed here just report the vehicle location. In the UK devices that monitor your actual driving tend to be called "black boxes". A tracker is about mitigating theft risk and a black box is about mitigating crash risk. Some insurance companies here offer discounts to (usually young) drivers who opt to have a black box fitted.

Was suprised how much harder to insure in the U.K. this year compared with last year. 50+ year old driver (makes me feel old) with 25+ years no claims bonus blah blah etc. last year was £250 this year £400 (admiral) typical was £500 and most would only insure if had a tracker fitted. Changing times.

Technically you already have a black box fitted although the info can’t be tied to a driver. All vehicle operational parameters are recorded and sent to BMW.
