The brakes

Hi, I have a 2022 230i coupe and can’t tell if the brakes are bad or if that’s just how these guys are

There’s sometimes a slight whine to them when slowing to a stop. And coming to a stop always leaves the car jostling a bit, it’s hard to make a smooth stop. I don’t recall my previous F30 feeling like this

I’ll bring it up to the dealer at the 6k oil change but was just curious if anyone here had similar issues. This car has the M Sport Package without upgraded brakes.

Thank you!

My M240 brakes are super quiet and smooth upon braking. Don't have the upgraded performance pack which I believe includes bigger brake kit. The brakes stop well but the 'feel' isn't great when coming to a full stop. Could partially be due to the weight of the car.

What does help for me is turning off auto stop/start. I'm still working on a smooth stop, but I'm getting better. Never had this problem before with any of my previous cars.

Currently 6514 miles on it so I believe they are well broken in now.

I still love driving this beast. Trick is to try and not have to use the brakes and do the good OL California stop at stop signs.

Have you noticed the engine breaking in sport plus vs comfort mode?

Yea this ‘brake feel’ coming to a full stop sounds like what I’m talking about. No matter how slow a stop the car rocks back and forth a bit. The weight is probably a factor like you were saying, but it’s not that much heavier than the F30

Would a brake upgrade help or is this just baked into the car’s design?

Maybe try new brake pads. If that doesn't help maybe go for a brake upgrade. I'm just gonna live with it as I adjust.

That being said, my 2022 Golf R has much more predictable braking. It's also about 400 lbs lighter.

Nice, which do you prefer? The Golf seems to be faster, does it feel as solid as the BMW?

I test drove a C300 and it was surprisingly light and dainty so that’s what I mean by that “solid” feel

I prefer the M240. The B58 is a true gem.

The R is not faster and feels less refined. Don't get me wrong, the R is a nice upgrade in performance compared to my MKIV and MKV .:R32s.

Yeah my wife has a 22 S3, same stuff.

The S3 really shined in autoX versus the M240, the steering is awesome in those things. Can do a hairpin with one hand, M240 steering feel is a bit non existent, and the ratios lock to lock are night and day.

M240I is much faster, and performs better in every scenario, but the feel is just different.

I would agree. The M240 steering leaves a bit to be desired (numb). The R has better steering feel and better brakes. I'm sure the lower weight helps with at least one of these.

If they shipped those with the B58, and X-drive instead of "Quattro-Lite", I'd be trading up for sure!

I do enjoy the rear bias AWD of the M240 but the steering and weight detract from it a bit. Just took out my 987.2 Spyder today. Lightweight RWD (2800 lbs) and hydraulic steering. Easy to get some arse out slides. Just heaven.

Here's a pic of my two favorite drivers. Just finished a full detail on the Miata (wash, clay, 2-step correction, surface prep cleanser, ceramic wax, and ceramic spray). One advantage to not having any PPF/Ceramic. I can do all the OL Skool detailing. Happy motoring!

For an update; took it at 7400 and had them look at the brakes along with an oil change.

They confirmed the issue, took apart the front and rear brakes and said they had to ‘chamfer the edges’ on both to fix the squealing. Picked it up today and so far so good, sounds much better!

I notice slightly jumpy stops on mine (600 miles so far, not past break in). Hard to get a smooth stop. Don’t think it’s the weight, seems like how the torque converter is engaging and disengaging when the vehicle stops. I always have the auto shut off feature disabled

For example, it’s hard to inch up slightly when parking in my garage, because the car wants to lurch forward (engaging torque converter)

that seems amiss, no such mannerism on mine, also run always with auto shut off disabled.
I'd have it checked out at dealership.

Is that with or without auto hold engaged?

Without, never really use auto hold. Seems like it may be getting better as I get closer to 1200mi break-in? Or I’m just getting used to it
