Talking GoPro Hero (new) and Fuhu Nabi Square HD: CHEAP!! Updated 10/13/14

Update 10/13/14:long story short was not as impressed with the entry level gopro as i had hoped for.. given the difference in price and lack of accessories or ability to work with many accessories i expected far superior video and audio quality. both were no doubt better, but did not adapt as well as i had hoped in low light and excessively lit settings. i'm still going to keep the GoPro, but I must say the Fuhu is a much better value play no doubt and quality is not that much worse. The biggest win for the GoPro was how much more audio it picked up without the waterproof backdoor.. nothing spectacular, but the audio was definitely noticeably better. I'll post a a few video links for those interested.

Please note that the headrest mount I made was finished at the time of the Fuhu videos so the rattling you here there is my fault not the fault of the camera.

Fuhu Day www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWWvcLzu1is

Also made a headrest mount for those interested I'll post a DIY costs $2 and works like a charm.. Also made a Swiffer (extendable reach mount) that provided you have the swiffer costs <$2 for those interested let me know and I'll post a DIY/youtube vid both are very easy and must haves. Cheers!

Update 10/8/14: Alright so I got the GoPro the other day, but unfortunately it doesn't come with a tripod mount so no video just yet. Ordered one on Amazon and that should be here tomorrow.. In the meanwhile this is what the entry level GoPro looks like.. definitely take a look not entirely what I expected!

GoPro initial look and comparison to the Fuhu below

Fuhu

Didn't see this posted anywhere and wanted to bring it to everyone's attention. Posted a video at the bottom to see the quality in a low light/rain setting.

I'm sure many of you have a GoPro and that is a better product.. however there are a lot of us (myself included) that aren't willing or don't have the need for a $2-400 camera. I have been following the knock offs for a while and there are a few decent ones out there, but pretty much all the ones that resemble a GoPro were crap..

Then I came across the Fuhu Nabi Square HD. They are actually made for kids, but are supposed to be quite durable. Now I haven't had one fall off my car yet so I can't comment on that, but I doubt its as durable as the GoPro by any means.
It retails for $169, however Amazon sells them for $90 and woot.com often sells them for $50.

Records video at 8 MB like the GoPro (1080p at 30fps 720 at 60fps)
Takes pictures at 8MB (I think)

I'd like to get several of these at some point just to have a cheap way to mount several cameras at once.

In most respects its pretty on par with the GoPro Hero 3+ Black with a few exceptions and for those of you looking for professional filming this may not be the right choice for you.

The Pros:
Significantly cheaper
Better battery life than the GoPro
Has a sleep mode when left on, but not recording unlike the GoPro
Relatively durable
Comes with many attachments/accessories
Well lit filming is on par with the GoPro
Does pretty well in low light/rain (Gets grainier the darker you go like to GoPro)
Supports up to a 32 GB micro SD
Fuhu seems to be a legitimate and well respected business ( check out their website and credentials.. also pretty sure Amazon created the Kindle Fire HD for kids by copying Fuhu's version)
Works with GoPro mounts!

The Cons:
Likely not nearly as durable as the GoPro (I haven't had to find out fortunately)
No wifi
Very low light and dark settings are a bit grainier than the GoPro
Audio does not get picked up very well without being touched in a video editing software (I think this is standard with all action cameras)

The Unknown:
What happens when this thing falls off my car.
Haven't taken any photos, but thats not what I'll be using it for.

If something looks wrong or I missed something do let me know. Posted this quickly and I don't have extensive experience with the GoPro Hero 3+ Black.

Hope someone finds some use for this and I'm sure they will.

I posted a raw video to youtube in a low light/rain setting to show how it performs in a sub-optimal setting. Check it out and watch it on YouTube to see it in 1080!

Quality doesn't seem bad, but doesn't seem great. I do know a few people who've used the cheap knockoffs for the cost savings, and the price is definitely worth it. But I'm holding out for the genuine article, since I don't have a real need in the first place and can't justify buying either :P

The wifi is the killer for me. Ignoring the awesome framerates on the newer GoPros, I definitely want the remote monitoring and control.

I bought two of these off WOOT for the price you mentioned.. $55 each. And for that price you can't go wrong. A lot of people run a multi camera set up and that gets expensive if you use all gopros (almost $1000 for three?!)

I was impressed with the quality of these and love that they have a remote control that allows you to start and stop the camera as well as take still pics. The mobile device capabilities of gopros is great but when it comes to value I think the Nabi takes the win here, especially if you can get them as cheap as I did.

frame rates are no different between the go pro and nabi
unless i'm missing something

before you judge the quality remember that i purposely posted a low light video in the rain to show that it does do a pretty decent job compared to the gopro (cheapo mount i used wasn't helpful either shook a little bit on any slight bump) and all action cameras are pretty weak in this category by nature (grainy) including the gopro, but the gopro does have the low light setting, which more or less adjusts the white balance.. something that can be done in a video editor and all i posted was a raw video.

that said i will definitely say in very low-light settings the gopro definitely has an advantage noticeable to the eye.

don't think you'll get a real article anytime soon.. its made for kids and has been around for a bit now lol.

if i had money to burn left and right i'd pick up several gopros just not in that league.. yet lol.. also i'm big on not paying for marketing so i look for value plays when i can. 335 was one of em.. did that twice.. shoulda learned the first time lol

the wi-fi is cool.. i just don't personally have a use for it.. not sure where it would come in handy from the car.. once its mounted its mounted and the nabi comes with a simple, but very functional and dependable remote control and 32 gb of space is pretty solid.

again no doubt the gopro is a better camera, but i like that this has just most of the bang for a fraction of the buck.

where is the link to buy for $50, if I could mount it like blackvue in front of the rearview mirror, I'd get one.

they show up from time to time.. woot is a daily deals sort of site run by amazon.. you can buy one now on amazon for 90 new shipped.

you'd have to buy a suction cup mount to put it in front of the rear view mirror.. i'd have to take a look and see if it would reasonably fit hidden in front of the mirror.

I'm sure something could be rigged to hold it in front of the rearview mirror, double sided tape maybe? Gorilla makes a really strong double sided tape, or even a suction cup style mount like Daily Three mentioned.

i will be picking up a gopro hero on 10/5 and will compare the two.. the "entry" level gopro for $139. the fuhu has some features that don't come with it such as the lcd viewing screen and remote control.. hopefully this won't be that much of a setback!

my hope is that the quality of the new entry level hero will be better than that of the fuhu and that the low light will be better as well.. if not i'll return the gopro.
