E93: Joyeauto, AUX, and reverse camera trigger

Hi everyone - I recently picked up a Joyeauto device to enable wireless CarPlay in my 2011 manual E93. I also bought a rear view camera. The device works and connects to my phone as intended, but I need some help figuring out what’s wrong.

1) the device is supposed to produce audio by connecting it to the AUX port, but no sound is produced when I connect it. In fact, if I have the radio or CD playing, it continues to play while switched over to the CarPlay screen. Further, When I select AUX on the CIC screen, it shows the volume as all the way down and does not allow me to move the on screen volume dial for the AUX. I suspect that this might indicate that my AUX is not working. How can I test and/or make it work correctly?

2) I was told by customer service that the device is supposed to automatically switch to either a black screen or the camera view if installed when I put the car in reverse, but neither of these things happen when I put the car in reverse. Customer service told me “this likely means that reverse in my car has not been decoded by CAN” and that I would need to hard wire a relay between the reverse lights and the camera to make it work. This is strange to me because my buddy has the same car and device as me And when he installed his, he never needed to hardwire anything. His car automatically triggered the camera when put into reverse. Does anyone know what’s happening here? Is there another way for me to enable the signal to the camera/device that the car is in reverse without hardwiring something? How could my friend’s setup be different from mine?

Thank you all for reading, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

1. You need to select Aux input in iDrive/CIC. The way these CarPlay/Android Auto units work is that they play through the Aux cable, but the stock CIC is still the only one connected to the speakers. So to hear the CarPlay sound you need to switch CIC to Aux input. This is not done automatically.
2. AFAIK, reverse detection only works on automatic transmission cars. On manual cars you need to hookup to the "Reverse Detect" line on the CarPlay box. This is typically done via the reverse light, but I'm not sure what's the best way to do that (mine is an automatic and it does work to detect reverse on its own (my Android Auto box is a RoadTop from AliExpress)).
