Anyone been to Iceland?

We're looking at going around Christmas and wanted some pointers.

I've been thinking of making the trip for 25 years, as a multi-day layover as part of a trip to Europe.

An airline from Iceland recently started direct service from the large (but desolate) airport about 5 minutes away from our front door, so there's more incentive to take a weekend trip to Iceland just to look around.....

I've only heard stories from friends about things being pricey. Since they need to import literally everything... Other than that, a very beautiful island.

What are you looking for? I’ve been there and can provide some thoughts.

Stay as close to downtown as possible. Tours usually leave from there along with other attractions. The Blue Lagoon is a bit away but tour buses can take you there. I feel like the best thing to do would be to rent a car and drive around the island. You can do the Ring road and visit some of the attractions. The rest such as Northern Lights can be booked with tour companies. For the lights, tour operators usually allow you to come back at no extra charge a few times if you don’t see the NL the first try.

Iceland has good nightlife and is huge on beer. So wander around, drop into a pub and try things. It is expensive so just heads up on that. It was expensive when I went in 2015, and I’d imagine it being much more expensive now.

Have been a few time back when Keflavik AFS during my flying time and did a week of vacation once when the jet broke on us. Expensive but airfare id cheap now via Ryan Air and Air Lingus. As mentioned everything is brought in by boat or aircraft so consumables are pricey.
