honestly follow the owners manual for the break in procedures.
I think its something like varying speed and rpms (don't drive at 55 mph or 3k rpms for 3 hours straight) and i think its something like try to avoid short drives (short enough that the engine doesn't get to full temp). Don't red line it, basic shit like that. But in all reality drive it like you are going to drive the car. Last edited by Zatellia; 05-12-2024 at 08:17 AM.. |

Follow the owners manual.
Engine is *not* broken in from the factory. Sure, the rings are seated well enough the engine doesn't smoke upon start up or at any other times, but it takes engine run time to effect a more complete break in. With a new JCW bought the car in Loveland CO -- this in March 2023 -- and headed home to Benton County, AR, 873 miles from Loveland. Drove about half way the first day and while I was on the freeway was making a real effort to vary RPMs, engine load, as I drove. Second day set out and as the miles went by the engine perked up some. Clearly it was going through an accelerated break in. While I have bought a number of new cars this JCW as the first I drove more than a couple of hundred miles after buying it. Bought my M2 in April 2023 and drove it 200 miles home from the dealer. But I didn't really notice the engine perking up after this drive. But it did perk up as the engine accumulated more miles. |

shift at/around 4k rpm for first 600 miles, keep it to half throttle or below especially in gears 1-3. After 600 miles keep it below 6k rpm, no full load in gears 1-3. Don't let the gearbox do aggressive kickdowns, best to drive it in manual mode with the auto box.
Manual doesn't say it but I'm a firm believer in getting lots of engine braking in early on, I've done it on a bunch of engines now and never had a oil burner despite a few of them being well known for burning oil like crazy. Can do it approaching lights, downshift until rpms are around 4k then just let it brake itself down to 2k etc. |

Also, if you are getting an auto be aware that you probably don't want to even use the level 3 transmission mode. It will take it to redline with very little provocation in auto. If you are shifting manually it shifts quicker, but I'm not sure it's even worth experimenting with when brand new.

I’m in early stage of break-ins (~400mi) and tried transmission S1-S3 mode with relative light throttle below 5k rpm.
I can tell S1 shift is very smooth and S3 shift is very sharp, it almost feel like someone does not know how to drive manual and just release the clutch before waiting for revs to drop lol. For S2…I honestly can’t tell the difference between S1, seems identical to me. Does anyone else feel this way or can tell a bit of difference? |

Seems strange that an M2's engine is not completely broken in by BMW. Other makers like AMG this is the case and. you can watch videos on how they do this in for all engines.

there's other stuff that needs running in besides the engine (gearbox/drivetrain components/differential), and even still the engine isn't done with the process for thousands of miles based on the metal content found in oil, it's just that most of it is done in the first couple thousand.
