Thanks for all the suggestions it really helps seeing different owners perspectives and pros vs cons. Right now I have a Storm Bay Metallic 228i Gran Coupe and I absolutely love that colour I wish I could get it from the M240i but I cannot. So I think I'm going to go with Brooklyn Grey as I live in Canada and the winters get pretty bad so I don't want to ruin the thundernight paint and I won't have the time to take care of it.

Thunder
I had a M240 Safire black...A job to keep clean of course.
One of the resons I sold it and it was convertible...and now have a thunder on order....I am wondering if it will be a constant pain to keep clean like black ! I still don't think the Grey is that striking and want that with this car. I am 67 Years old...am I trying to hard ? Hap Last edited by Hap; 07-22-2022 at 08:08 AM.. |

Ive had a lot of experience with different color vehicles. Generally speaking lighter paints are easier to maintain- and the darker paints more difficult.
Imo Brooklyn Grey is by far and away the easiest to keep clean. There's no Silver in the G42 but that's the next easiest color to maintain. Then comes the 2 white paints, they'll hide dust well but wont hide dirt in the lower panels like Grey and Silver. Next is Red and Blue which are somewhat tied and then comes Thundernight Metallic which might be slightly easier to maintain than black, which is obviously highest in difficulty to keep clean. So that's my take on maintenance. For me it was between BSM and TM so I knew I'd have to prepare to refresh my detailing skills either way lol |

I had the same dilemma when ordering mine. Was leaning toward BG but my daughters and wife were pushing for Thundernight Metallic. Went with the later and do not regret it one second. I get great comments about the paint and thumbs up every weeks since I got the car 4 months ago. Color change depending of lightning. For sure it probably get more dirty compared to BG but better than my previous Black Saphire Metallic M235.

Color is subjective but all I see is "primer gray" with BG. I went with TN as I always wanted an e36 in techno violet. FWIW my nephew is my CA at the local BMW dealer, and he told me he has delivered a lot of new vehicles in BG as of late...I actually like it better once I saw it in the flesh vs pics

hilarious you say this because thats exactly what i told to the sales guy at my local dealer. in his defense, he said something along the lines of "hey at least you'd have a shot at catching the batmobile in this" hahaha

Thundernight is a special color, very rich and deep. When it's clean (like black), it really pops. As noted, though, keeping it clean and swirl free will require some work.
Brooklyn Grey is also a very cool and classic color, but doesn't have the depth of TN. However, it does have some metallic in it and a little bit of blue, so that in different lighting conditions it has different looks. The bonus of a lighter color is that the black trim, especially with the extended shadowline trim, really pops. I chose BG because my car isn't garaged and still looks good after sitting in the rain or driving on salty roads. However, the main reason I chose BG, is that it reminds me of the 2009 Porsche Sport Classic. When I first saw pictures of that car, the simple grey color blew me away. While BG was not for me - TNM my choice - does have a nice look. Have not seen this color on a M240i in person yet.
Hopefully, the color has longevity and you enjoy for years to come! |
