Boston Trip

Might be driving to Boston for a few days next week with wife and 2 kids. Any must sees, or must eats you can recommend? Thanks.

You can check out:
Faneuil Hall (freedom trail)
The North End (similar to little Italy in NYC with lots of Italian resturants)
Boston Common (mini version of Central park)
Charles Street (Beacon Hill neighborhood)
The bar, Cheers is a couple blocks down the street
Newburry St and Copley for shopping
Fenway Park in Kenmore Sq

You can go across the river to Cambridge to check out Harvard and MIT if that's your thing.
You can also try the Duck Tours, it'll take you around Boston for about $30-$40/person.
When you have a chance drive over to memorial drive and you can see the Charles river and Boston's skyline.

As for places to eat, it all depends on your budget.
Steak Houses try Ruth Chris it's walking distance from Faneuil Hall. Capital Grille it's on Newburry or Abe & Louie on boylston st
The North End for Italian
Chinatown (Jumbo Restaurant for dinner or China Pearl for Dim Sum)
Burgers try Bartley's Burger near Harvard University.

If the weather is nice try going for lunch at Top of the Hub at the Prudential, you'll get to see all of Boston. I wouldn't recommend going to dinner there but drinks/dessert there are alright too.

Well hope you and your family enjoy your stay in Boston!

Mostly covered already, but a few additions from my experiences! If you are a breakfast / bakery type, go to Flour (there are 2 locations). Sticky Sticky Buns are awesome. Get there early.

For seafood, I usually go to Legal Seafood. It is right on the harbor near the aquarium. There are cheaper places and good recommendations if you just want a lobster roll, but I can't think of the name off the top of my head.

The weather likely won't be great, but again the Freedom Trail and USS Constitution are possibilities, or the Bunker Hill Monument for a nice view. I hope you get to go and enjoy. I miss it.

Thanks so much TL (Tim?) et al. The above suggestions are very helpful. I will also be in Boston for three full days next week and we will have a car for a day. Is there anywhere you would suggest that we drive to? I was thinking Providence, RI.

Also, we will be staying at Copley Plaza so does anyone have recommendations of things to do during the evening? We arrive late Saturday night.

Thanks in advance!!!

No prob just trying to do my part to help a fellow member.

I'm not too sure about RI as I'm from there. NH for tax free shopping and nice scenic drive to Kancamagus Hwy (not sure if there's much to see cause winter is near). Maine for lobsters and Kittery Outlet. Since you're here for only 3 days i think the duck tours should help cover most of historic boston.

Your hotel location is pretty central and there's plenty to do walking around. Copely & Prudential Mall, Trinity Church (it was in the movie National Treasure), Fenway Park is about 20-25 min walk away. Bar hopping on Boylston Street. You can hop on the "T" (that's what we call our transit trains) Green Line E train to the MFA (museum of fine arts). Drinks at top of the hub should be nice.

I'm not from RI, but Newport is a stop you might want to consider. It's beautiful down there, and the mansions are pretty cool.

There is always the casinos in CT (maybe 1.5-2 hours from Boston depending on traffic).

Copley is in a good spot, but nothing immediately there. I stayed at the Westin Copley last year. It's located in a good spot and pretty nice, but you'll need to walk to get anywhere. Keep in mind Boston is a SMALL city (40 sq. mi. or something like that). Walking isn't a big deal. About 40 minutes walk from Aquarium back to Copley (that's across most of the city). Taxi's are also readily available. I've been to Bell In Hand before and it seems like a cool place if you're looking to go out. Concierge / taxi drivers might be your best friends depending on what exactly you are looking for.

Plymouth is about an hour from Boston and is where Plymouth Rock is (Pilgrim's landed there). It's a nice quaint downtown area. Not so exciting, but interesting, relaxing and good food.

I'd recommend staying away from Salem (witch trials). It's kind of a joke except maybe on Halloween.

Boston and the surrounding area has just about everything there is to offer (except warm weather). It's tough to make suggestions without knowing more about what you are looking for!

My favorite town so far up here is Portsmouth, NH. Pretty cool place with some good food and shops. Newport, RI is nice too.

I also recommend The Barking Crab on Seaport Blvd. for seafood. They also have a great selection of local beers.

Barking crab is good but better to hit it up during the summer when you can really enjoy sitting out the deck. It is fun though, your kids might enjoy cracking lobsters with the 10-pound rocks they give you to use. Neptune Oyster is generally regarded as the best seafood in the city and they also have good burgers.

No. 9 Park is a pet fave if you're up for an expensive (but not stuffy) dinner and probably the best bar in Boston. There are four great places in the South End, which is less touristy and open later - Hamersley's Bistro (french), Toro (seriously good upscale tapas), Aquitaine (french), and the Beehive (mixed restaurant/bar/live music). If you like sushi, Douzo is my favorite so far. O Ya is the best (well, most expensive) restaurant in Boston that serves Japanese/sushi.

I like City Bar in the Lenox Hotel for drinks. If you can get to Drink across the channel in the Waterfront/Seaport area ($10 cab from downtown), it's a pretty unique loft bar with old-school bartenders and good bar food. There's a restaurant upstairs called Sportello that's also quite good.

General things to do with the family - Freedom Trail, Duck Tour, walk through the Common/Public Gardens, Museum of Fine Arts, Institute of Contemporary Art (highly recommended), Boston Symphony Orchestra, Faneuil/Quincy Market, North End, Aquarium (next to the Legal Seafood on the waterfront), Children's Museum, Harvard Square (great in the Fall), Back Bay (especially on weekend afternoons)

Totally unrelated thread jacking... I was on a flight last year out to Pittsburgh and sat next to this absolutely breathtaking blonde... She was 34, and just gorgeous. Low and behold, she's a corporate lawyer for Legal Seafoods at the corporate location in Boston.

I would've asked for her number but I was dressed like a scrub since I was flying AND she had a daughter. I've tried dating the single moms and it never works. Too much baby-daddy drama to deal with.

Hey Tim et al:

I just wanted to say thanks so much for your tips!!! We had an excellent time last month and it was very warm and sunny at that time (rare for early to mid Nov). The duck tour gave us an excellent overview of the city (and the Charles River ) and we then focused on various sights. We visited the North End (few times), Boston Common, Beacon Hill (Charles, Acorn, Mt Vernon Streets, Louisburg Square, etc), Faneuil Hall, Downtown Crossing, Harvard, MIT, etc, etc, etc. Boston is a very walkable city when the weather is nice. We walked from MIT to the Top of the Hub for lunch with a view on a sunny day. Our hotel (Fairmont Copley Plaza) was at a very convenient location right across from the public library and within walking distance to the "T", Newbury St, Boylston St, the Prudential Center, etc. Heck, we even walked to the North End from our hotel once. I thought I would list some of these places to add to this thread for future visitors to the city.

BTW, the food in Boston was excellent!!!

So Tim et al, thanks so much once again for your suggestions. I greatly appreciate it!!!
