APEX | G42 Technical Thread - All things APEX on the G42 2 series.

Paging G42 2 series owners in the Bay area! We're looking for volunteers for test fitting and photoshoots! Volunteers will get copies of the photos (If a photoshoot is involved), a discount on a set of future APEX wheels, and APEX goodies/swag. If you're interested in volunteering, please fill out and submit our online form (no robots allowed!).

We are looking to collect data on the new 2 series platform for future wheel fitments including brake clearance and suspension clearance data. We've already had a few owners reach out to volunteer their cars, but it's always great to have more cars as options. If you have other models of BMWs or other cars that we might support, feel free to use the form as well. All are welcome!
Here's an idea of what a typical test fitment and brake scan looks like:

If you'd like to take an inside look at what the photoshoots involve, our good friend Blake made a video detailing the process of an 18" photoshoot on his F82 M4 recently:

We're excited to begin the process of working on the new 2 series. Let us know if you have any questions as well!

-Tom

We aren't that good at swimming with our Laser scanner.... yet. It's the thought that counts!

For additional clarity, these test fits take anywhere from 1 to a few hours if a photoshoot is involved. In most cases, you'll stop by our office in Pleasanton CA, although this isn't always the case.

We have some sample wheels en-route that we will be testing on this chassis as time allows and we have a few volunteers on our lists. No guides yet as well won't be making those until we have wheels prepared and confirmed for the car with testing to back the fitments up. We're always looking for more volunteers though so feel free to complete the photoshoot application forms linked above if you're in the Bay area.

As soon as we have more info and wheels ready for this chassis, We'll be sure to post on this thread!

Are you guys working on conventional 18" wheel fitments for the G42? 18x8, 18x8.5?

Apologies for the delayed response. Our Bimmerpost notifications aren't always making their way through.

Not at the moment. Our initial focus for the G chassis fitments has been 19" options, but if we see enough demand for 18" track fitments in the future, we may consider it! A close look at our 19" stuff to follow in a minutes...

Brooklyn Grey G42 2 series on 19" SM-10s

This sample set of SM-10 wheels was built to work on the G20 3 series, but after seeing the factory 2 series offsets we knew we had to try them on a G42 2 series as well. Judging by this preliminary testfitment we are excited to say the least. The setup featured in this post is a staggered 19x9 front wheel paired with a 19x10 rear wheel and should be a direct fit on the G42 chassis. We also tested the 19x9 in the rear as well as we know 19x9 square fitments will be a popular option for these cars with the heavy emphasis on xDrive from BMW.

BMWs' switch to the new 5x112 bolt pattern meant that our old catalog of 5x120 fitments wasn’t usable on the new G chassis cars, but we’re excited to begin properly supporting these modern chassis with our SM-10s. The Flow Formed SM-10s shown here will be the first design launched for these cars, but we are planning to offer more designs and forged options in the future. Full production wheels should be coming into stock later this summer and we are shooting to get a Group Buy for these wheels live soon. A huge thanks goes out to our volunteer Alex for lending us his beautiful M240xi. As a reminder, if you live in the bay area and are interested in professional photos of your car on sample sets of APEX wheels as well as a discount, please submit a reply to this form: https://www.apexraceparts.com/suppor...hoot-volunteer

Specifications

Wheels & Tires:
SM-10s in Anthracite with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tires. (not xDrive compatible)
Front: 19x9" ET28 with 245/35-19
Rear: 19x10" ET38 with 275/35-19

This set was orginally used on a G20 3 series as a sample set and we wanted to validate wider and shorter front tire fitment for a RWD car. There are a number of xDrive compatible tire options that can work on this platform, but I would recommend the following option as a good starting point:

xDrive Recommended fitment:
Front: 245/40-19
Rear: 275/35-19

Stay tuned for a chassis-specific fitment guide soon!

19x9 ET28 Rear Fitment

An excellent option for xDrive cars or owners looking rotate wheels and tires between the front and rear axles over the life of the set.

Is there a benefit to the "square" set up over larger rear wheel/tire combo? Does it improve the handling in some way?

We don't have the ability to do custom colors for one-off sets at the moment, unfortunately. It's something we've looked at a few times, but it generally doesn't make sense financially on our end. We may offer different finishes as we expand into forged lines, but those are still in the works.

It'll lead to more neutral handling and less understeer at the limit and promote oversteer to some extent. The main benefit in my opinion is gaining the ability to rotate your wheels and tires between the front and rear axles over the life of the tire set. This will help even out the tire wear and ensure you really get the most out of your tires but you are giving up rear-end grip for this advantage.

Tom, you didn't even mention that these fitments are profile 3. 2-series finally getting some options for concavity!

We're moving away from full wheel and tire packages at the moment and won't be selling tires with these wheels. Our last series of Group Buys was run without the ability to add tires & its a restriction applied to all of our wheels rather than specifically these G chassis fitments.

I have to leave something for you, Jake. When were you buying your new 2 series again?
