Valvetronic Motor Relearn

I wrecked my car (2006 e90 n52) awhile ago and cracked my head in the wreck, in the process of rebuilding i decided to replace the head with a new one, but am using the valvetronic motor off the old head. I have the d-kan cable and was going to install INPA.

My question is, if the valvetronic motor needs to relearn the start and stop point will INPA pick up on that start the process or is it like a sub-menu? Im not sure if anyone on here has even done this ,just thought I would ask

Why would it have to relearn? Wouldn't its function be fully controlled by the ecu?

When replacing it should be relearned. Its recommendedbit be relearned even when being removed for a simple vc gasket change. I would like to know which section in inpa does this as well.

You are correct, there are two ways for it to relearn either ISTA/D or just pure mechanics.


To the OP, there are two ways you can do this either relearn it with ISTA/D or remove the valvetronic motor and with a screwdriver push the eccentric shaft gear as far back anti clockwise as it can go. Insert the valvetronic motor and connect its 2 pin plug. Then switch the ignition onto position 2 and within a space of 15 seconds, depress the accelerator pedal down to full throttle 10 times and you will hear the valvetronic motor program itself back to factory spec.

I was wrongly advised to replace my 330i's valvetronic motor late last year and the mech did not properly calibrate it (the only reason why I let him do the job, otherwise would have done it myself), and driving home the car was a b1tch to drive! The throttle was very jerky and suffered badly from run-on, and most concerning, the engine would not pull all the way to red line when I tested it. At first I thought it might have to adapt, so drove it some more, but no change! I then returned home and left it with the intention to take it back after the weekend. But then I was watching a youtube clip of the basic process of replacing the valvetronic motor and it mentioned the basic end stops initialisation - this involves turning the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine and it will (should) perform this initialisation. Tried it, and indeed I could hear the motor actuating, and then all was quiet. Repeated the process to see if it needed to do it more, but nothing. So it just needed that first initialisation, and then the mech was supposed to do the fine software calibration, at least that's my understanding...

I have a 2012 BMW 128i. I replaced the valve cover, checked all the wiring, and tried to start the car. Apparently I should have set the valvetronic first. Now the car won't start. I have tried the re-learn procedure by putting the key in and letting it find it's points. All I hear is a click, I don't hear an engine running. Is there any way to salvage this?

check your injector connections on that rail where you removed two plugs next to the intake manifold.

Check that your ignition coils are connected and seated, as well.

Check the +12v connections on the firewall. The thick one is the starter lead and has a brittle crimp connection. If you bumped it or rested on it, then it may be broken

Valvetronic Motor Reset

I have the same issue. Replaced the Valvetronic motor gasket, and installed the motor using clockwise rotation of the jackscrew via the 4mm hex key port. Is now the correct time to do the reset? (Key on, 10 gas pedal pumps in 15 seconds.)

Is it crucial to turn the eccentric shaft counter clock wise? I installed it and I turned it clock wise and it won’t start. It also throwing a transmission code, would that be related? Will I need a scanner to delete any codes so the installation can work? Please help!
