Question about sunroof rattles
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I'm really OCD when it comes to rattles and I put in a lot of effort to get rid of them in my e85 and e86 back in the day, not looking forward to doing this in a brand new M car |

Agreed, though personally I have never had a BMW sunroof rattle at least that I can recall over the last twenty five plus years with the marque. Correction, I did with an E36 which eventually had the sunroof cassette replaced under factory warranty. It resolved the issues afterwards. It made a mess in the interior since the headliner, A, B, and, C pillars had to be R&I’ed. Last edited by T_U_D; 11-15-2022 at 07:49 AM.. |

G20 2021 M340i here. Have brought my car back 3 times now to dealer to fix TERRIBLE sun roof rattles. Every time I bring it back they have to pull the full headliner, and every time they do it creates more rattles somewhere else, like above the rear passengers area where the top brake light is housed.
Never again. |

This is not the 1980s. None of my sunroofs rattle. I have 4 bimmers. Heck, the sunroof in my e36 doesn't rattle either and it's 25 years old.
However, the glovebox on the e36 rattles like crazy... |

I have almost 25000 miles on my F22 240 and have never heard any rattling from my sunroof. Use it frequently too.

The E36 glovebox was truly horrible until 1996 when it was improved. The E36 interior materials were the worst. That is when BMW was aiming for the car to be highly recyclable and eco friendly glues were being used.

The problem here is that I'm not sure I can order the carbon roof as a standalone package, and just the plain roof makes the car a bit more bland than I would like. But very good point, thanks.

In my 2023 Mazda CX50, it came with a sunroof area rattle from the factory. The first factory solution was to "squeeze" the trim in key areas to bend the clips for a more secure fit. That solved the rattle.
I know it's a completely different vehicle, but it made me wonder if most rattles are trim related, and can be solved similarly. Just food for thought.

I've owned an E30 M3, E92 335i, F30 340i and an M2. All had sunroofs and none of them have rattled.

The rattling on this "panoramic" sunroof in my E91 is insane. It has two primary sources: (1) mechanism rattles (the wind block that pops up when you open it rattles in stored position -- I've worked on it for years and never open the thing; I have it blocked) and (2) the large glass panel rattles over bumps...loudly. Both my other cars are slicktops (purposely, for helmet clearance and since we never use a sunroof), and I'd give anything if this E91 was a slicktop, but that wasn't allowed in the US.
If the loss of front headroom wasn't bad enough in this E91, this thing intrudes on the rear seat headroom significantly - thankfully I don't ever ride back there since I can't. Make sure you don't need headroom in the front and the back of the G87 (supposedly the sunroof is larger than the F87 (?), and if so likely intrudes further on rear room too. On my E39 M5, the manually operated covering would go flying back when I'd hit the throttle hard, so I made a warranty claim on it when it was near new. That fix lasted a few years and the problem returned that I "fixed" by placing some foam appropriately. I had headroom issues in that car for 15 years all due to the huge intrusion of space created by the mandatory (in the US) sunroof. A continual problem created by something that was never used and forced on all buyers in the US market. My goal is to never own another car with a sunroof if I can help it. We're considering an X4M, and thankfully there is a sunroof delete option to check on that!

My 98 glove box is also crappy. Warped and rattly. I need to replace it. Already replaced the door cards, headliner, window regulators and just about every single bushing, mount, and other substandard rubber component all over the car. Now it rattles less and handles better!!!
