1st Drive M2 G87

Posting as I assume some are looking to trade up. Not a huge amount of content but looks like vids are going to start rolling through

I heard rumors that they are only making an m2 and dropping the competition version from the lineup. Can anyone confirm?

Its going to be a great car, no doubts about it. The gigantic screen looks like ass, I will never like that. It actually looks ok with that wrap which means its not going to look great without it lol

but it will drive amazing, I am sure of that

I see the shitty looking gloss “carbon fibre” in the interior

I hope they offer the Matt as well!

Seems like a minority opinion. I wish my M2C came with the normal glossy CF. I have been in F82 many times with glossy CF and it looks much better. I usually have to explain to people the dry carbon is not fake.

Totally agree, I have the M Performance V1 steering wheel in my comp WITH the gloss carbon steering insert and it lifts the whole cabin. Who cares if it doesn't match the fake dry-weave carbon everywhere else.

so did anyone objectively compare the car vs the predecessor or is this just typical marketing nonsense?

One thing I immediately expect to hear is improved traction, stability blah blah...

Well lets start with some basics, the rears are now 285s (now PS4s not PSS) and the car is longer and heavier lol.

No, it was a few laps around the Sachsenring in very highly camouflaged mules, that’s all.

It’s gonna be better in most ways. It’s going to be just like a short wheelbase G82, same as F87 behaves like a shorter wheelbase F82. Not many people seem to think G8x is worse than F8x, outside of the grille.

I can't find it now, but didn't one of the video reviews imply manual only available on base M2 and M2 Competition would be auto (similar to M3/M4).

Regardless I'm sure it was just conjecture, since they can't definitely know at this point.

The point in general I was trying to make is... the E92 to F80 was very revolutionary... NA to Turbo... far more torque, solid rear subframes... etc.

That's for the M3... and the new M2 won't even get xdrive which is the only real "new feature"... so in effect you are getting a more powerful, heavier car w a subpar tranny... This is where I think the marketing always gets ahead of real truths.

Everyone says the G80 is a better performance machine than the F80... I havent seen anyone say that it feels better, rawer or just more authentic... most just say its faster and newer, well obviously.

a lot say that the G has better dynamics than the F, the seating position is much better and the carbon buckets are excellent. I think apart from looks and if you rather have a DCT the G is a better car than the F. Personally I would pick a G over an F if we are talking m3/4 since I would go manual. I have drive the DCT and ZF back to back and I know people wax poetic about the DCT but the ZF is really good but I can see that being a thing people will hold on to when talking about the F vs the G.

As far as M2 though, the F87 looks that much better, I almost would have rather they really change the G87, I will take the big pig nose over what they done. The rear of the G80 actually looks cool but on the G87 is not great. The F87 is already heavy, the extra pounds won't be felt just like you don't feel em on the G80

The seating position is an issue with the F87. Feels like your driving on stilts.

I had the ZF in my M5 Comp. Good transmission but DCT is better.

Do we know a weight yet? I know the m240i is heavy as sh*t, but I don’t know the prospective weight of the new M2. I can’t imagine the car being heavier - it’s already too heavy. Not really any issue re: speed - more chassis feel. Better weight distribution will probably offset some of that though.

I really don’t like the looks of the new car - it’s one of the reasons I decided to get the F87, which is as good looking a car as BMW makes.

its by far the worst thing of the f87, you really notice it when you hop on a different car where you sit lower and just feels so much better.

People who go from S55/DCT aren't going to like the S58/ZF8 combo, for a number of reasons. The ZF8 is a fantastic transmission if you've never experienced the DCT, but if you have you're ruined by those super car-fast gear changes and liveliness. The ZF feels like a really good normal transmission, but not at all special or engaging. The S58 has to be revved out to get the power going…a lot of people like that but if you're coming from an N55/S55, it will be a big adjustment. I suspect the G87 will have a detuned variant (but just as much weight) which will make this worse.

Seats are great (slots for harness), but perhaps just the same carbon buckets from the M3/4. And it is hinting at a power-dome or perhaps even CS-style vented hood. But brake-by-wire gives me the creeps. And what's with the 'let's f-up the front grill' campaign - like they held a contest for a NEW way to wield the ugly stick.

I do love the side profile. Excellent proportions. And it looks properly wide. Love that is has a more angular look which looks more modern too. Excited to see it actually as a F87 owner.

So true. My only major issue with the F87. I wish it could be fixed. I was just looking in the garage where I park My F87 next to my F33 and the difference in roof height is instantly noticeable. If the M2 could at least get to the 440’s driving position it would be a huge improvement.

This is something I noticed in pictures as well and I came here to ask the same question. Manual version had the regular seats and the auto had the carbon buckets.

So true. I had the ZF in my 340i and I thought it was brilliant....Until I drove the DCT in my M2C. Really no comparison.
