Radiator additive

Hi,

Occasional my car's coolant temperature goes up to 97degress - 99degress after driving for a while. Usually when in traffic or if it has been idling for a while. It doesn't always do this and remains on a steady 87/88 degrees when on the move.

I saw a product additive called Radiator Relief advertised which can help with radiator flow issues.
Has anyone used this or can recommend.

That's perfectly normal and shows your thermostat is actually working (very common for them to fail and run cool), as long as the rad fan is kicking in and stopping it climbing over 100c don't worry about it.

I have seen climb over 100 occasionally...
Replaced thermostat in April for genuine bmw one. Previously had aftermarket part that had failed. It was falling apart when I removed it!

It won't hurt anything to run it but your car is behaving normally. These cars are very advanced and have several different coolant targets for different types of driving. So IMO don't worry about it, but if you like it then it may help it cool off a bit quicker after the temps briefly rise. I'd imagine it's like Watter Wetter or that other one that's basically the same thing

Whyzee is right. It's one of the reasons why BMW stopped fitting water temperature gauges. Customers were constantly contacting dealers with stories of wildly fluctuating water temperatures. Oil temp is much more stable, hence the use these days of oil temp gauges.

while I agree with whyzee125 in principal, the diesel coolant temp variance is usually narrower than gasoline.

The d tends to go up close to 100C under heavy load and/or DPF regen cycle, otherwise stays ~88C flat.
The i tends to favor higher coolant temps during highway profile to "improve fuel economy"

If it is N47, my best guess is that occasional temps ~97-99 caused by DPF regen at idle/traffic.
Which also concludes that the engine operates as designed.

Firstly, thanks for all the replies, didn't think I would get many!
Since I replace t/Stat for genuine bmw one and pressure bled the system it seems to get up temperature sooner now. It used to get up to mid 80's then down to 77-78 degrees.
The reason for my concern initially was that when it went up to 97+ I would get smoke coming out of my bonnet... Turned out to be a warped rocker cover that was leaking oil onto my manifold and dpf. Replaced this with genuine one and gaskets and no more smoking.
Think I shall keep an eye on the oil temps. Have Ista d, so hooked this up and regen was done last week. Will keep an eye on it - if it's constantly regening there could be a problem their. Says I have 53km remaining mileage on Dpf. May look at getting this cleaned.
