seems like a good reason for any such services to be done from, say, another country. Its kind of sad that the EPA doesnt have anything better to do than monitor for emissions infractions on a dozen or even couple dozen vehicles, and even more sad that we as a country allow them to have enough funding to waste time pursuing a dozen or even couple dozen infractions.

The EPA is a joke. They are worried about a few dozen of us meanwhile the majority of the US military doesn't use pollution controls. Doubt highly that our US tanks, HumVs, Personnel carriers, etc use AdBlue and won't start if empty. Likewise most motorcycles, watercraft, aircraft, lawnmowers, etc have zero pollution controls / standards.
My 21 inch Toro push mower doesn't have a catalytic converter or EGR. Does yours? |

This is not true. The standards are less, but they are there. The older carburated 2-stroke engines haven't been legal for a dozen years or so, and new standards took effect for all small engines in 2012.

+1. They're as useless as any other government agency these days.
Thanks Obama.

I could never understand WHY people are removing/disabling their pollution
control systems when it's a federal violation to do so and often results in little to no gain. Of course I've heard stories of fantastic gains, etc. and perhaps these are true. How do these cars pass their states' emission testing programs? Or are those fooled by s/w modification(s)? |

PSEE cars that get EGR/DPF/SCR removed will not pass emissions, most of us are in states that require hardly no inpsections, If you have read the threads the EGR/DPF are our culprits, MANDATED by EPA to be so called Clean Diesel BUT unfortunately destroys our cars!!
BTW any gains is good but, when you can gain anywhere from 20-30 whp and BETTER mileage its a no brainer to me!!

I feel sorry for you folks in the US. Your government has got you so paranoid now that soon you will not be able to fart without being afraid.
I would just relax and not worry about things. Gov't and their adjunct organizations have more things to worry about than a small group of guys modifying their cars. Plus how can they prove it you did it. And even so, takes you a day to put it back to stock. |

This problem is not unsolvable on BMW's part. Maybe some kind of replaceable filter in the EGR system would do the trick, or sucking exhaust downstream of the DPF to recirculate (maybe not during the regen cycle). But I am not an engineer, I am sure throwing a bit of money at the engineering would have fixed things. Anyhow, if EPA is serious about this they would go after BMW for cheaping out on the EGR system causing a design defect resulting in the foreseeable illegal modification of their engines.
Anyhow, I dont blame the SCR system for this problem. This is a common problem with all DI oil burners. Yes, blocking the EGR will work. But I question whether even the EGR is needed. Doesnt the SCR system do the job anyway? Or is the EGR there incase somebody removes the SCR system? I think that the SCR system should do the cleaning and the EGR shouldnt even be there. But that is just my 2¢.
