Does anyone know part # or name of the suitably thin 3M tape or what thickness should be used (1 mil, 2 mil...)? It seems it would be a transfer tape, rather than a double-sided, but there are so many options..

TIA
I have the same issue, looking forward to see if anyone has this info.

Definitely not the right stuff - too narrow (possibly s/b 3/8") and adhesive is too weak.

Trying 3M 300LSE .39" next

UPDATE:

As it turns out as I am redoing the cupholder door, I notice the adhesive on the console is failing. I have a feeling this is going to be an ongoing thing.. maybe the aluminum trim is not the best candidate as a substrate. I've lost patience / interest and will be listing the uninstalled kit in the member for sale section along with the rolls of tape..

Did you prep the surface with alcohol? Using quality tape? I'm assuming there's people on these boards that have installed the trim with the aluminum trim.

Yes 91% IPA. I used the tape that came pre-installed on the kit. After that failed I tried 3M 300LSE. It seemed to be sticking better, but just started to get the feeling when the console overlay was also loosening that in Florida heat this was going to be an ongoing game.

Honestly, I was never crazy about the idea of a stick-on solution. Had I known about the port installed option, I might have..

I am in Florida and installed the kit over the aluminum trim. I haven't had any issues yet.

I am going to give it one shot at redoing it as I know my first install may not have been the best but I may be giving up on it as well. Mine was holing well until last week we hit some high 80 degree days and then straight back to 50s and now it just doesn't want to permanently stick. I did prep my gloss black trip with alcohol and I thought it was holding well up until recently.

i work a lot with 3m tape, prep is key! IPA is one key but i also like to use a heat gun on both surfaces prior to sticking the tape on i also heat the tape after i pull off the red plastic backing you will notice a huge difference in doing so and a much better bond.

What’s the best 3M tape for this job?

I’ve just ordered the inlays and want to avoid any issues. Noted on the surface prep and heat gun method. 👍

I have a question. I just got this CF kit and I’m about to install but notice this section left of the steering wheel has a different trim than the rest. It is piano black and the other are the hexagon style. Is this normal? Just want to make sure whoever had this car before me didn’t put this there so I’m not doing an overlay on an overlay lol. I have a 2020 m340 by the way.

Also any general tips on installing would be great! Got my 91% IPA and a heat gun to heat the adhesive before applying. All tips and or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think that is normal. On my Eur 2019 G20 it is the same, Tetragon alu on the center and dash … piano black for the small trim on the left. Just cover the piano black piece
