Did a resonator delete on my E90 335i
Not a big deal to many of you "senior" members, but quite exciting for a newbie.
I'm quite pleased with it. Just needed to tell someone. Ps. Thanks Ken for your advice. |

E90 335i resonator delete - Everything else STOCK.
Only the resonator deleted. Everything else on the exhaust is stock. Remember this is the SEDAN and it is the Pre LCI, if you have the coupe, then take what I say with a grain of salt, especially since you don't have a resonator.
I wasn't going for loud. Wanted a little more "understated growl".....and I got it. If you want loud, then you won't want to stop here. 1. Tone is a little lower. Growls when I step on the gas, but quiet on the highway at constant speed. I was pleased with the tone. 2. No drone. My use of the terminology refers to an annoying vibration/buzzing at a certain rpm and speed and gear. 3. I unplugged the vacuum actuator and did experience drone in S5 at 60mph. Plugged it back in and no drone. 4. The stock resonator is a straight through design, but the channels are quite narrow. New pipes are much bigger than the resonator. 5. Replaced with two separate (divorced?) pipes. I do feel like the engine responses a little more freely when I step on the gas. Muffler guy said the cost of fabricating the X pipe would not justify any benefits.....but it probably wouldn't hurt. So cost vs benefit. The separate pipes works for me. 6. 1 hour at the muffler shop, with bending and welding. $150. Can I plug Rag Muffler and Brake in Portland, Oregon? They do a lot of work for Pacific Motorsports. 7. On the highway, I get more road noise from the tires and wind noise than from the exhaust tone. 8. I'm leaving my secondary cats in, and stop here with the exhaust stuff. 9. Sound may change as the pipes settle in and with carbon buildup. I want to reiiterate, I only wanted the "understated growl" on acceleration, with little noise at cruising, and this is what I got. So it works for me. I would love to get an exotic catback, but could not justify the $1500 to $2000+ for only about 10 hp at 5500 rpm, which is what most aftermarket catback manufacturers advertise. BMW performance is going for $2000 at the dealers and they are only mufflers, axle back. It's a poor man's mod I know, but for the money, I think my car now sounds good. Unless you are really picky, you can't tell that it isn't an exotic. The rest of my budget is going to go to suspension upgrades. I don't think that sound clips recorded from a phone does any justice to any system. So I'm happy to take anyone in the Portland area for a ride, or PM me and we can get on the phone while I drive. Hope this helps you decide. Feel free to PM me. Other members have helped talk me through things, my turn to pay it forward. |
