Chipped/Cracked Windshield

Has your windshield chipped or cracked yet?
Vote in the poll so we have stats!

Intentionally left out an option for “not yet”, because it’s just a matter of time it seems, so we want your final vote.

I voted (yes), but for my G42 since the windshield is likely identical.

FWIW my friend with a G82 also cracked his windshield within the first hundred miles.

1141 miles, no problems whatsoever.

Maybe you guys should stop doing donuts in the rock quarry.

No issues yet in 2200km, but I have had other (non-BMW) vehicles with chips and cracks by that distance on a new windscreen. I would say I average about 20,000km between chips and cracks on any vehicle (no pattern other than random luck), but has been as low as about 1,000km and as high as about 50,000km.

Wow, I've had 2 chips and no cracks since mid 2000, across 4 cars and almost 200K miles. (I've been driving longer than yr 2000, but I can't say with certainty i didn't have chips ever. But I know I've never ever cracked a windshield.)

I dunno what to say. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Unfortunately the vast majority of automotive glass is produced in one of two places, China or Mexico.

Porsche is currently having glass issues on 992s. Windshields are cracking on brand new vehicles that have not even been delivered. Their ‘lightweight glass’ is just randomly cracking as well.

Over 2500 miles. No windshield chips/cracks. But like moodyhanks82 one flat -- well, slow leak -- tire. Fortunately it was repairable.

But I note I bought a new JCW in Loveland back on Feb. 27 and drove it 873 miles from Loveland to Benton County AR and on the way the window picked up a chip which I had Safetlite fix (at a cost of $183!). Not a cosmetic repair but one that I hope prevents the chip from turning into a crack.

Not like I tail gate dump trucks -- or any vehicles for that matter. Just bad luck. And I note windshield chips and flat tires come in waves. I'll go years with no flat tire or windshield hit then get several over a short span of time. Then -- thankfully -- the events cease and I drive years before the next round of bad luck happens.

Sure. I only know what I am told via our techs as I am not one. Google search is your friend. It is out there like everything else. I am highly confident that I have also read about glass supplier issues via subscription-based Automotive News within the past 6-8 months as well.

Mmm yeah but your techs also told you the manual transmission M2 comes with a wireless tray behind the cupholders! Hahahaha

I don't see any difference between the Saint-Gobain Sekurit windshield that was likely EU produced for our Macan S that has had 2 chip repairs and is now fully cracked from the 3rd chip it received last winter at about 17,000km, and the Saint-Gobain Sekurit one on our M2. Global companies such as Saint-Gobain have global production standards, no different than BMW global products.

Incorrect, my techs DID NOT inform me of that. Please get your facts straight prior to throwing other individuals under the bus. FYI, That was per my own experience in Arizona prior to the press launch last March.

The Sekurit Saint-Gobain brand isn't part of the Fuyao joint venture, so it isn't Fuyao manufactured glass in our M2. Fuyao also manufactures glass in the US to stay within CUSMA/USMCA tariff free parts production rules. I've only had Saint-Gobain Sekurit and Pilkington glass in our previous BMWs.

Again, incorrect… my windshield is Sekurit.

If you’re implying Saint-Gobain is using subpar materials/technology to make glass in Mexico (assuming that’s where they’re being made), can we make the same statement about BMW and its use of Mexico as a production location?
