Cool That was CLOSE....

I damn near ordered an M2 yesterday out of the blue LMAO. Went to the old store's new dealership to see what was around. My wife went behind my back and told a sales associate that I was really ready to order an M2 even if I didn't know it.

Well, they supposedly had an M2 allocation drop in about an hour earlier. SO.....I started thinking what if......

Turns out THIS dealership wants $5,000 advance to order any M car. I damn near choked. I would have paid an earlier markup if I was OK with forking over that kink of $ up front. So we will see what kind of advance a couple other dealerships want for an M2 today.

Even if I get on a waitlist for an allocation, I am ready. Just need to sell a motorcycle and a truck before delivery....

I don’t get it.

A deposit is not markup.

I was a bit confused as well about that. If they are just asking for a deposit at MSRP what’s the issue?

Thought I was missing something. While it is a bit on the high side, as long as it can be afforded and is refundable, whats the issue.

I just don't give out money like that. A $500 - $1000 refundable deposit, cool. $5k for an M2? M3CS I can see......I will ask that up front from now on.👍

+1

$500-$1k is a reasonable deposit. $5k is just making an interest-free loan to the dealership owner to make his next yacht payment. Funkdat.

I had to do a $5k deposit on my M2. Toyota also does it for their TRD Pro’s with a $3k deposit. Porsche is $10k for a GT car. Lamborghini is $25k and McLaren is $20k. 😀

I dont agree with it as well especially now that interest rates are up. They need to give us interest while they are holding that money

I put a $2,500 refundable deposit back in the beginning of November 2022 (as a repeat customer). You are ordering a custom built car on a model that is not just a standard/common lot item. It is what it is.

I was only asked to put down $1k for the M2 which of course goes toward paying down the car. I have had to put down various deposits ($1-5k) for Porsches, even ones sitting on the showroom floor. Last two I bought I had to do $2500 to hold them until I could get to the dealer to do wet signatures and pick up the cars. As long as it’s going toward paying for the car and you can afford it, shouldn’t be an issue. It’s also negotiable too. I think the dealer will throw out silly numbers and you have to talk them back down to reality.

When I found an unspoken for M2 on a dealer's lot -- this last March -- I agreed to a $2500 *partial* payment. Oh, and I had paper work that listed just exactly what I would pay for the car. The only question was what would my trade in (2022 BMW 230i with 7K miles) be worth. Dealer had given me a number which agreed with my research but of course said the car would have to be inspected. It was and the trade in number remained unchanged.

As long as the $5000 was I guess was classified as some kind of partial payment not just a "deposit" and I had good/acceptable *hard* numbers on what the car was going to cost I'd be ok with $5000 in this scenario.

I see you mention you have to sell a motorcycle and truck. If these must be sold before you can buy the M2 maybe you had better hold off on ordering the M2 until after you sell those vehicles? Used vehicle sales are down and winter is not a good time to sell used (or new) vehicles. There is the very real possibility the M2 could appear before you have sold those vehicles.

I put $1K refundable down at time of order. Same thing with my Bronco. I probably would have put up to $2k but that’s my limit.

So the salesman said “no way!” When you offered $1,000 deposit? That’s strange.

Yeah, like I said, up to $1000 - $1500 would have made sense. But in 2020 our Purple Silk M340i order at another dealership required zero up front. I'd have thought a purple order would require a significant deposit. Seems a dealer by dealer thing.

Yes. Exactly. They claimed there was a $5,000 deposit requirement to order any M car.

Good way to scare customers away. 5k is way too high.

That is my opinion as well. But I know there are folks who can and do fling around cash like that.

I agree, especially for not being the "initial" pre-release waiting list but if that is what the dealership does, it is what it is. I also have a feeling it could have been negotiated down but thats another story altogether.

For what it's worth that's what I had to put down on the M2 I ordered today from a high volume dealership. Was $2500 for my m340i. they go towards the final payment so it's not that big a deal in my mind, I'm paying the money anyway and 5k isn't going to net you much in a couple months of investing unless you're gambling it on sh*tcoins in crypto

I had probably the first custom ordered G87, first with carbon package for sure as HEA cars were the ones getting delivered when I got mine. Zero deposit. Didnt sign shit, just sent them a screen shot from my phone of the spec. I just dont get dealers that make it hard for people to spend their money there.
