Wastegate rattle Fix
As in Mr. 5 thread http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176269
I took the car to one of my mechanics and we fixed the rattle. I have a perma smile now when I drive with the windows down. The throttle response is also better I can tell. If you have the rattle while crusing and letting go of the gas pedal, do this fix. Its awesome. |

does it matter if you are on the old or newer software for the fix to work?

I am out of warranty, and even if I was under warranty with all my mods who knows what they would say, I wish i did this a lot earlier.
Takes at least an hour or so cause the engine needs to cool down, and then test drive it to ensure it is gone, we did mine twice cause I still heard it and adjusted it slightly more. Now its just a very minimal rattle when in idle most likey from the other turbo. But night and day difference when driving and all you hear is turbos spooling, not pots and pans rattling LOL. |

I just had this done. it was embarassing to be driving such a nice car around with such a glaringly obvious (and loud) mechanical defect, so i got it done as soon as i possibly could as i wasn't sure if it would be causing any further damage. definitely made a difference.
i've heard BMW say that you will still hear a slight rattle at idle and this is a cause of the high pressure fuel system at work, but i don't know if this is legit or just blowing smoke so i don't bring it back again lol.

How easy is this fix? I can just take it to any shops and show them his thread?
Also if you have PROcede and set your wastegate position at 90% and do this fix, would it still work? |

how much did it cost, from my understanding, you can never fix the wastegate because its very hard to access and very difficult to adjust the rod to tighten it to a certain degree, if you over tighten it, the turbo will blow over time due to the limited pressure flow, also bmw is unable to fix the rattle, i think it might just be a temperately thing

Checking around, say at ECS tuning, the replacement actuator is only 32 dollars USD..
what kind of labour does this involve? IE how much to remove the header unit and replace?

What'd that run you? I'm sure the actuators are more robust? Are the turbos different in terms of requiring a tune?
