BMW G42 m240i or G20 m340i?

The G42 m240i and G20 m340i both have identical engine, transmission, 382HP and 369lb-ft of torque.

Custom build a m340i or a m240i? And why, if you are in the market for either one of them?

Anyone planning to upgrade from F22, m240i? comments appreciated.

BMW G42 m240i or G20 m340i?

Both cars are very similar. I guess it depends if you need 4 doors/5 seats or not. For my part I dont and prefer the coupe look, more agressive design, slightly lower weight and the wider wheel option.

I come from an m235 and cross shopping this with an M2C and leaning on the M240.

I've had an M340i since August 2019 and owned a 2015 M235i, both xDrive. The M340i is far far far better car than the prior 2er but that smaller coupe body was great. Now that you can basically get the new 3er in a 2er coupe body, I'm very interested in the new m240i. There are a couple options that you can't get with the 2 and appearances are different (I like both) but not a whole lot of difference on paper really. Cost how I would equip one is about $9k less than my M340i so that's a bonus.

In the end I think it comes down to the size of car you want because they're gonna be very similar otherwise. I favor a smaller sport coupe although the G20 is pretty remarkable in the handling department.

To me, the G42 m240i looks better, is a better size, and has the correct amount of doors.

I'm over 6'2" and get annoyed with the B-pillar in four-door vehicles.

This. I think it looks better and it's a coupe. I know there's a lot of hate on the looks of the new m240i but I dig it

Also I'm a wheelchair user so 4 doors makes it harder to get my chair in the car after I get in. My x1 is a pain in the ass to get into compared to coupes. Also the rear seat moves out if the way easily so I can toss my chair back there.

I have an M340i and my lease is up in August 2021. G42 M240i is among the front runners. Same interior, features, and drivetrain as my 340 but in a smaller package. Should be ever so slightly faster due to the small difference in weight. Refuse to pay sticker so hopefully incentives will be in play by then.

I am in the same boat, M340i lease ends next August but I am under mileage so will extend 2 to 3 months if possible. However, I only buy RWD so hopefully by then those are available. Although I would prefer a G87 as the proper upgrade but that may not be available then. Decisions, decisions...

I had a loaner m340 for a weekend, I didn't find anything special with that car. Driving my m235 was special everyday. BMW is still good at make small fun car. If you enjoy engaging drive everyday I suggest go for 2 series

I prefer the looks of the 340, but the 240 would be bought to complement a 4-door which we already own. I also dig the slightly smaller size & lower price (and the possibility of purple paint?).

Different option buddy. I used to have way more fun in my E46 coupe than in my m6gc and even in my new m5. Smaller cars give you more driving feeling without using fake stuff. It's just physics.

Agree 100%.

Thus one of the reasons why:

M340 has mild hybrid system so the sound the car makes is uneventful where the M240’s platform is smaller and can’t fit the mild hybrid system so this is still a fully gas powered beast. Yes you may lose a little mpg but it will all be worth that cold start. That also means exhaust options will be all you need to make this sound good since the tune options for the G’s is still dicey at best

I currently drive an 18' 340i with the lease expiring this month. Previously drove a 335 and a 330 E90 before that. I've had sedans for a long time now and since the wife has an X5 we've got the larger vehicle covered, so am going for the M240. The car is slightly smaller so it'll be a bit quicker and handle a bit better. I never really used the backseats, so if you're in the same boat I say M240 is definitely the way to go.

M2C if you can get one! It will blow all other cars in terms of the overall experience. Every time you will be smiling in that car!
