DIY: E9X ACC Retrofit

Attached is the PDF for the E9X ACC retrofit guide. Make your $5,000 E9X feel like a Tesla!

The ACC works great and was amazing on the highway when I drove to New Jersey to pickup some heated seats. I only needed to touch the gas when I was sitting in someones blind spot. It works decent in around town driving but you do have to pay attention more.

06/19/19 Update:

The PDF has a few errors that I will need to fix when I get a chance. For the coding instead of the FTM you need to code the LDM. I have no idea why I put FTM ( flat tire monitor) as a module that needed to be coded on the PDF. The full list of modules you need to code are the kombi, DSC, LDM and CCC / CIC. If I was going to do this again I would make a tap harness with a few four pin male and female connectors instead of soldering the wires to my factory harness.

Keep in mind 03/07 cars or later will need to retrofit a LDM module. Those can be found on eBay for $15.

Also vehicle diy made a video about this retrofit:

you should mention that LDM comes with 544 option only on 6-cylinder pre-2007 cars
after that it will not be from factory but it is needed for ACC retrofit
also 544 option may come with xdrive cars and these car also can be 4-cylinder
and if 6-cylinder car in europe had'nt any cruise option at all it will require instrument cluster upgrade

This is awesome! When you refer to "P Can lines from the LTM" is the LTM the cruise with brake system that the 2006 E90s have? I've wanted to do this retrofit for awhile now.

Secondly (and I think this is where my confusion is) is the adaptive cruise control into which the VW harness needs to be tapped the LDM or a supplemental ACC module? Are the LDM/LTM the same?

I'll start working to secure parts. Mind if I ping you with questions?

At least on the early cars the LDM controls the ACC. You can tap the P can lines where ever you want from the loop.

Wow, that's sweet. I'm jealous. I don't think I'd ever go through the headache of all that for mine but I'm sure it must be rewarding.

If you find the parts for cheap then just buy them. They are so rare.

Just ordered all the parts for this retrofit.
The ACC sensor I ordered did not come with the three adjuster bolts, so instead of the 3 "nuts" listed, I had to order a "repair kit". The repair kit ($60!!! wtf!) includes three adjuster bolts and 3 nuts.

I also ordered an LDM ($17 from ebay including the chopped off harness) and a combination switch with the active cruise adjuster.

The guy I ordered the combo switch from is here, and he has two more sets:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/362482324584

The part (61319203110) is listed for X6 only, but X6 and E90 share this alternate part: 61319203109, so hopefully it will be close enough that I can use it.

Have you fit your combo switch yet? I'm curious if that part is good to go as the price is right for sure.
Thanks

IR system?

I am assuming that the "sensor" part is an infrared LED and IR receiver setup. I wonder of this part can just be made out of off the shelf parts or retrofitted from another car with the same type of sensor?

You can read up on the sensor system here:
https://www.bosch-mobility-solutions...ruise-control/

It uses radar to develop an "image" of the surroundings, and uses a combination of that and the steering angle sensor to figure out which target to track. It isn't just a simple distance sensor.

The module is similar in appearance on Audi, Mercedes and BMW. No idea if the datalink is compatible at all, but I would guess that it is not.
You should be able to pull a 5 or 7 series E-series sensor, though no guarantees.

Ah, it is a complicated beast then. One thing I am unsure of. Do I need a different cruise control module or just the stalk control for ACC?

That depends on your car. In 2006, cruise control was a separate module that also supported ACC. In 2007 for sedan/wagon they moved basic cruise to the DSC module and eliminated the LDM, only including LDM for ACC cars. I'm not sure if they made the same change to verts.

So for my car, I have a box that contains an LDM, a sensor module, brackets for the sensor module and the replacement cruise stalk, a bunch of wire and a few wire terminals.
I'm hoping to install it this summer when I have the dash out.

The only difference for the cruise stalk (if I remember right) is an adjustment for the following distance, so you can run with the original stalk.

If you look at the PDF at the top, it lists all the parts you'll need (though the LDM note is above the parts list)

Hmm, I see. I have a 2008 so I need to do some digging when I have some spare time.
