Where to go next with increasing performance

Hey guys,

So at this point I've reached a point where I'm not sure where to turn for the next upgrade to my car. At this point I've done just about everything excluding the downpipes, and while I know those will be a huge benefit with everything else I'm running unfortunately if I threw those on my car I think I'd get endlessly harassed by police in my town (the AA exhaust is great but its a bit louder than I expected). Without changing the turbos, what would any of you guys recommend to look into next?

Any help would be great, thanks everyone

Not sure if theres anything that can make your car go any faster, but a STETT cold air intake and oil cooler will make your car run better and who knows maybe free up a few ponies.

hmm I'll look into the intake. I have an Injen but I've been recommended to try others

Downpipes def are next. A pain to install and pass emissions inspection. Nothing a handshake with a benjamin can't fix . Racegas and racegas maps couldnt hurt either.

I'm not worried about inspection...I got friends to help with that but im worried about the volume. I had downpipes once, but on the stock exhaust setup...catless DP's would mean the car has only mufflers, which isn't necessarily a bad thing buttttt wouldn't it make it very loud?

DEf DP's.. throw the stock catback exhaust on if you have to.. It lets the turbo breathe out alot more..

Throw some E85 mix in there..
Rb's after that.

+1. With the majority of gains in exhaust mods coming from dp's not the rest of the exhaust that would be the best mod for power.

I don't know about the cops in your area, but I don't know of many people who have issues with cops and volume from aftermarket exhausts on later model BMWs. Traffic stops for volume are largely subjective and cops often ignore "nicer" cars for such things.

Keep the intake you have , you wont gain anything by changing it.

put a drum of E85 with a hand pump in your garage. oh, and let me use it. LOL. do the downpipes, man. I doubt you'll get hounded for that as others have said...Now I don't have aftermarket exhaust but I do have tint (for which I get pulled over almost monthly) and never once has anyone said anything about increased noise.

I'll have to look into the high flow cats. I've heard sometimes they clog easier? and I'd love to go RB turbos, but idk if the awd can handle the increase in power. to be honest, I haven't researched if anyone with awd is running them

There are a few 335Xis running RB's without trouble, here's the write up from ProTuning Freaks on the one they recently did:
Quote:
Hit the dyno with Andy's 2009 BMW 335xi. Scorcher outside, 95F. On top of that the car is AWD so naturally higher drivetrain losses than RWD (10-12% RWD drivetrain losses vs. 20-22% drivetrain losses in the AWD 335xi). Bone stock, XIs make 247awhp/260awtq on this same type of dyno, in much nicer weather conditions.

Dyno was a Dynojet 424X 4WD dyno, typically a lower reading dyno than your average 2WD Dynojet. Andy's car has full boltons (intake, fmic, catless downpipes and exhaust), RB turbos and runs pump gas only, no methanol injection. The car went on the dyno with OTS Stage2+ Aggressive (Linear Throttle). It made 369awhp/396awtq with power and torque tapering towards redline. After our custom calibration with Cobb's AccessTuner we made what we feel are some impressive gains especially given awful weather conditions and pump gas only.

Result: Gain of +30awhp, +30awtq peak compared to the Off The Shelf (OTS) Stage 2+ Aggressive Cobb tune. What's even more impressive is at 6500rpm the car gained +47awhp over the stage2+ map!

With nicer weather conditions the car will no doubt make another 15-20whp easily on pump gas. With methanol, given the relatively conservative tuning we are running at this point (18psi peak) we have plenty of room to grow. Andy is a road course junkie and in his world controllable power at the tip of his foot means more than peak hp. We've also adjusted his linear throttle map further to his liking for better tip in feel and smoothness.

In case you're wondering, a similarly equipped RWD 335i would baseline considerably higher (270-280whp instead of 247awhp with the XI). If we went wild and swapped Andy's drivetrain to RWD this same car would've put down approximately 440-450whp on PUMP gas in 95F conditions (today), 465-470whp in nicer weather, which is pretty astounding at least to us.

Dyno chart below. Andy, thank you for trusting us with custom tuning on your car, all the best!

Cheers
The dyno sheets on their website: http://www.protuningfreaks.com/

BUT if you are considering RBs, it wouldn't be worth while until you got those catless DPs installed

There has only been one actual report out of thousands of catted highflow DP sold by CP-e of the catt "unwinding"

I cannot speak for AR Design.

The only reason a catt would uncoil in the DP housing is if the tune rides the knock sensor and lean burns - as was explained to me.

Not sure where you live in NJ but I never had a problem.

You could always get a catted downpipes like CP-E.
