Yeah just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt but I think there's plenty of evidence of their pride in their M2s. Lol

I’ll plug BMW of Birmingham for ‘The Good’.
Bought my M240 back in March ‘22. Was on the lot for a couple days. I went for test drive on Saturday morn. Thought about it over the rest of the weekend (closed on Sunday) Bought on Monday. MSRP. No BS. CA was helpful and easy to work with. Put down a $1k refundable deposit once the M2 info dropped in the beginning of June ‘22. First on list. MSRP. Saw that they had an M2 on Friday. Booked an appointment to check it out on Saturday morning. Didn’t know they were gonna let me test drive it as they know I want a manual in BG. The M2 they received is ZF8 in ZB. Took it for a ride for about 10 miles. Their typical loop. No ADM on this M2. I asked just to make sure. As of right now, looks like it’s still available (136 views since Friday). |

I reached out today. It seems that since these 2 are "50th anniversary" someone thinks there might be a buyer that will value that enough. I'm pretty sure it's to test the waters and will change. Allocations are at MSRP though.

I responded something like thanks for letting me know. But if a local doesn't come forward and you want to sell a car give me a call. But I was going to continue my search so I might already have a car if you wait too long. |

However, I emailed the sales manager at the dealer asking now that the BMW track my vehicle shows the car at the dealer when can I come up and complete the purchase. No response but it has just been an hour since I sent the email so I don't think I've been ghosted yet. |

i know of a BG 6MT car available today at $2K over in the north east. i was going to buy it but i decided to wait for my order (in a different color). $25K+ over is ridiculous.
What is surprising is that a lot of folks are passing on these HEA cars, particularly the ZB cars. A lot fewer BG cars available from my anecdotal observations. |

This way, they can try to keep them around long enough to serve their intended purpose (as test drive mules/demonstrators; build a pipeline of demand and orders/deposits), but if some idiot really wants to pay an outrageous markup for a canned spec on a mass produced car that won't be hard to get, that's on them. Win-win for the dealership. Why not just mark them "not for sale" entirely? Best guess: a lot of them are also corporate shops with limited flexibility to work around their own policies. Or, as above, they don't really mind selling it but want to maximize the profit that one particular can bring, one way or another. People love to hate on dealerships for good reason but they're not all bad; I simply don't assume good or bad intention until I get to the table. I've had Porsche dealerships pull bait-and-switch games with huge last minute ADMs after discussing MSRP orders months in advance...but then on the other hand, I was picking up a car from one Porsche dealership and my bank was being incredibly fussy about a wire transfer, so they decided to eat a huge credit card merchant fee on $20k down payment simply so I could take the car home that day (plus I got a ton of points). They had a signed contract already, so there was no reason they actually had to do that. Obviously they still made plenty of money on the car, but better yet, they won my recurring business and are the only dealership in the region I now work with...never mind all the people I've referred their way. Treating your customer well is just smart business.

Yeah, my dealership is just saying they aren’t for sale right now. I didn’t ask when they would be, since their HEAs aren’t my spec. The CA I test drove with was surprised when I told him dealerships are selling their HEAs on day 1. Not sure why that surprised him. He was also surprised to hear some dealerships weren’t allowing test drives or wanted some sort of deposit before they’d allow a test drive. This dealership seems to be pretty chill.

Otherwise, you're getting a lot of buyers who won't hesitate to pull their deposits for any number of reasons, because it's all in the abstract. Exhibit A: Lotus Emira. Very few cars (GT3/GT4 come to mind) can be consistently sold purely on reputation alone (and even then...as a now-former 718 GT4 owner, I have some regrets about replacing my 981 with a 718 without driving one first).

I feel like type of person to be enticed to buy a car based off a HEA test drive isn't going to want to wait that long. I guess you could say the HEA car would lure people in but then sell them something else. I don't know, maybe I am underestimating the patience of your average car buyer. |
