Hook me up with your buddy if he can unlock the ECU and flash tune - pretty sure they still can't do it unless you send it to Russia or some shite.

Hillbillies hang out at tracks on weekends and such; I hate people.

Careful you are gonna spend more than a 240 to make it as fast as one Also you lose a lot of value bricking your powertrain warranty.

It's not a M car but having now had both the 240 is a far better day to day proposition imo. And, in terms of real world usable bang for your buck, it's quite hard to beat.

The 230i is an inherently better value than the M240i, sorry. It also helps that I don't drive like a little beach like a lot of people with nicer cars.
I live in the UK and have owned both the G42 230i M Spprt fully optioned and now have the M240i fully optioned. They look identical besides some very small details.
(Mirrors, exhaust tips, front vents)

On handling
The 230i does have a slightly better front end and feels incredibly nimble and sporty.

Haven’t driven the M240i hard enough to explore this but it does feel a touch less nimble at the front, mainly I’d say the worse thing is the turning circle at low speed is about a meter longer.

The killer for me was that the M240i comes with the LSD and in the UK this is not an option available to spec.

Power sliding the 230i was never very easy or controllable in comparison to the M240i that’s the main thing I care about being a hooligan.

Engine noise. I loved the 230i noise but damn this 6 cylinder has blown me away even full of EU OPF filters.

Overall summary and value

Based on UK pricing for a new car, I’d say the M240i is the best pick of the range including the M2. The M240i looks much better than the M2 and comes in more colours. It’s also powerful and torquey at the low end of the rev range.

230i are not much cheaper and when you look at the monthly payments on finance. Even after significant price increase and 2% interest increase in the UK my monthlies are only £43 more for the M240i

I’d say if you go 230i get a used low price one then sure it’s great value.

But for £43 a month it really didn’t make any sense for me to stay 230i

Love both cars. Would love to drive a 230i again.

Also one downside of the 230i is struggling to keep up with any other decent car at the top end. Never a nice feeling.

My 2011 3-series was totalled so I ordered a 2022 230i. BMW ended up cancelling my order as it was too late in the production year. I had some time before I could order a 2023 model so I did more research, found an M240i to test drive and ended up getting a 2023 M240i for just a few thousand more $ than the 230i would have cost me. Cancelling that order was the best favor BMW could have done for me.

If the M has more than one digit past it; it’s not a real “M” car.

Much simpler to just tell people it's a BMW with M parts and M treatment.

But we would all agree it isn't a part of the true M car lineup.

I had a guy I work with going off on a rant and get all worked up about how BMW is adding M badges to everything.....and he doesn't even drive a BMW lol.

I thought he traded it in I was dropping the car off the other day and a dude in a 430 was trying to race me in bumper to bumper traffic through a school zone. Around here they use speed cameras for those zones. You really gotta wonder about some people. I'll give the dude this he did gap me right past the speed camera.

Did anyone actually ask him if his 230 is RWD, or XDrive? Just curious...

That's not everybody's 230i purchase scenario.

Decided owning a 2023 MINI JCW (bought new in March of 2023) with no MINI dealer within 250+ miles was not that good of an idea and happened to be at the local BMW which serviced my JCW and spotted a white 2024 BMW 230i xDrive. Given winter is a real season here (Benton County AR compared to Livermore CA where winter consisted of partly cloudy skies...) the xDrive won me over. So I bought the 230i xDrive.

Use it in bad weather. Save my 2023 M2 for the better weather.

RockCrusher agreed, this was geared at the guy arguing that the 240 shouldn’t exist. I understand some may buy the 230 even when finances aren’t part of the equation.

And that was where the thread went in that ridiculous direction. Someone shows up and tells us that we are all basically fools for going with the 240. And he is a genius for going with the 230.

I would never knock someone for choosing whatever vehicle suits their needs.

To be honest, it was just a huge display of cope from that guy.

I understand who this was aimed at, but I’ll comment anyways.

I bought the 230i for financial reasons. Was able to pay it off in less then 2 months. I don’t like monthly payments 😣

I also want the moonroof delete. I have rarely used the moonroof in the past and would rather have more headroom.

For my use the 230i was better value. But I don’t hate anyone who bought a different car. No one should have that amount of rage.

Would I buy an M240 in the future? Maybe, but then I’d have to cut another hole in the dashboard for the drive side glove box. 😳

I used to be a member of the anti moonroof camp but after having it, I’ll probably never option a car without it, except maybe if it’s a carbon roof. It’s great on a nice day and provides a nice amount of light in the cabin. I even open it in the winter.

I just pray I never have to deal with leaking gaskets, cracked glass, or a failed open/close motor.

The removal of the side tray/cubbie makes no sense
