Tax disc on a trade in - keep or loose?

Ok, maybe a tight question, but my old 330d is trading in tomorrow, and it still has 7 months tax on it. Never discussed with the dealer whether this was staying with the car or not, so question is do I keep it or would that be cheeky? I'm pretty sure the dealer will just metaphorically "pop straight down the post office and cash it in" anyway, so why shouldn't I keep it? He did charge extra for £210 tax on my 'new' 330d BTW (I had assumed this would be included in the AUC price, so this was probably just part of the bartering game).

Keep it!

I always surrender mine, they are buying your car and not the tax disc.

Take a folder with you - keep the tax in the folder.
If the stealer asks where the tax is open the folder and give it to him/her.

Otherwise keep quiet.

If they contact you after the event just mention to them that it was there and they must have lost it!

Remember to send the DVLA slip for selling the car yourself. Don't let the dealer send it as a courtesy. Once you apply for a refund on the tax disc, the clock starts ticking and if DVLA don't get the form from you it's an automatic £80 fine (£40 if you settle quickly)

It happened to me. Even if you send it recorded delivery they still might not believe you. They don't care whether the car is off the road or not, all they care is that their procedure hasn't been followed.

They send an acknowledgment within four weeks. If you don't receive one within that time, get in touch with them straight away.

P.S. If it's not part of the agreement, it's yours to keep, otherwise it's only custom and habit - and a nice little earner for some individuals.

You keep it. Seriously, I did in January and had not discussed it during the deal.
If you buy a 2nd hand car from them they will charge for the tax.

You are not tight. This is something I've ALWAYS done, never given it a moments thought tbh and I have never discussed it with the dealer nor have any of them said anything.

I just remove it when I'm virtually at the dealers and pop it into my handbag. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it in any way shape or form. Totting it up, I must have done it approximately 7 times now. I am Yorkshire born and bred though.

Whereabouts, North, South, East or West? And I can't believe you even asked the question then

Seriously, some dealers I've heard of cash them in and share it all out for beer money. Better in your pocket!

Ditto this...also happened to me, managed to get the dealership to pay the fine though...read the above, then read it again, the DVLA are ruthless on this!

In relation to the TAX disc.....you know what i'm gonna say...get it cashed in !

The tax disc thing at trade in will become much more of an issue when VED is £400 for certain vehicles. If there is 6 months to run, worth £180, dealers (or those who they sell your trade in on to), will take an interest in it and I reckon it will become more of an 'issue' in the trade in discussions. Meanwhile, I would make sure the money goes in your pocket rather than the stealers,

A village near Driffield, called Nafferton. Its a lovely village so its naff moniker is somewhat misleading.

What parts do you hail from?

I know that area well, good driving roads around there and yes it is a nice village.

About 24 miles south of there. HU10

When I was young, a dealer actually phoned me up after I had picked up the new car to demand that I returned the tax disc I had removed from my trad-in. He took it as his god given right!

They might have a point though. If the tax disc is on the car when you first get it valued, then the price they offer you is for the car as it stands - including the tax disc. You wouldn't remove the seats would you? You wouldn't replace the fancy stereo with the original without saying to them first.

Still, keep the disc

I've been up and down it myself, superb driving country around there, especially between Staxton and Driffield

The garage i'm buying from is charging me £210 for years tax on my 335D, but he's also given me 7 months credit £112ish from the tax on my S3. I just sent him a photocopy of it - as i'm in Glasgow and he's in Cornwall!

So if i were you, i'd keep the tax.

And me I sent the change of ownership form off - Post Office lost it or DVLA lost it ai not sure. As most people would I completely forgot about it until this letter appeared out of the blue annoucing I had incurred a £80 fine. I was furious and phoned and complained and also sent a letter to DVLA but they dont care. I even had all the documentation and receipts of when I sold the trade in - they are not interested. You are responsible.

They just want another £80 from you - call it a tax disc sales tax
