defective water pump
I have owned my 330i (sports package, cold weather package, I-Drive) for about 3 months and it has almost 5000 miles on it.
While driving very moderatly around town (after a couple days of hard driving on the German autobahn) the I-Drive warned me the engine was overheating and told me to shut the engine off. We made it to the BMW dealer and I had a defective water pump. The mechanic said it was nothing that I did, just a defective pump. They got the part the next morning and replaced it and it's been working fine since. Has anyone else had this problem or know much about it? |

I haven't heard about this until I read you post. Thankfully no harm done to your car and you were back on the road again as quickly as possible.
Mechanical devices will fail, no matter how well built they are.

This reminds me of the E36 which was originally released with a "Fiber" (read: plastic) water pump impeller which was known to spin free on the shaft after 50k miles. They finally replaced it with a metal impeller around MY96 and superceeded the part. Let's also not forget the plastic water pump housing that was known to crack and the radiator hose necks that would fall off at 80k miles.
Plastic has no place in the engine's cooling channles. |
