Break-in service early?

I'll have probably 900 or so miles on the car this week. Is it ok to schedule the break-in service a little early, or should I wait until 1,200 mi? Reason I may schedule early is I'll be home for an extended period after next week and don't want to use my local dealer. I'd prefer to try the dealer near my other residence.

I think there was a recent post about someone being turned away because they did not have enough miles yet. I think they said you had to be within 50-100 miles of 1200.

Give the near your other residence dealer service department a call and ask if you can bring car in for the RIS (running in service) with around 900 miles on the car.

I did, I was just careful with the rpm’s. I had a finger on the paddles just in case I had to upshift if I was getting wild.

I think you have from 1150 to 1300 to get the service done. Don’t go over 1300.

I’ve been getting wild I can’t lie. I’m over 600 miles so I opened her up and in all honesty I barely touched 6k once and calmed it down from there.

Today was the first day I put her in sport (avoiding sport+ till after break in)

WOW. It’s a different car from efficient to sport. I can only imagine what after break in will be.

Service told me 1150 was the bare minimum to have it done or they would reschedule. But was also told to not exceed 1250 for certification purposes.

I had but I started doing that only after the car is warm with oil temperature up.
I did also hit 6k rpm occasionally just because I prefer varying the rpm for the break in.
(Hope this does trigger another whole conversation like those in the break-in threads).

Lol! I mean the manual says 6! Plus, heating cycles, right?

I’m trying not to baby her too much at this point over 600 miles while still being conscience of those parameters for health and longevity.

That's quite the tight window. I'd love to see BMW deny something if you didn't get it done in that 100 mi window

I have since 12 miles on the clock. I've never driven in Comfort. Car is strong. Did that with my F87C too. It's just the throttle position that's all. Doesn't affect the break in at all. It's actually more important to engine brake to vary the RPM during that first 1200, especially after 600 miles.

Its amazing how easy it is to put a couple of hundred miles on an M car. OP, go drive the car until you get close to 1200 miles and take it in. Car is meant to be driven

My issue isn't driving the vehicle, it's which dealership I'm going to be near when I hit 1,200 mi. If it's next week, I refuse to use that dealership for service. If I can it done early this week, I'm near a different dealership. 250 mi separates my two residences.

And if they won't do it until I hit 1,150 mi as mentioned above, then I drive home, now I'm past that 1,300 mi mark also mentioned above. It's not like I have nothing else to do & can just go drive my car around.

How much do you vary them? I’ve only hit 6k once after 600 miles. Pretty diligent on break in procedures before that mark.

My SA told me 1150 +/- 50 miles, better under than over. YMMV.

Drove in Sport for brief periods before 1200 miles but reluctantly kept under 4000 RPM.

I consciously would vary gears when driving normally. For example if I hit the freeway, I would bring it up to 6th but go down to 5th as long as it wasn't putting too much strain on the motor (keeping it under 6K RPM). When slowing down, I would engine brake when I could, nothing above 3K RPM. I normally drive like that as well but I was more conscious about it during the first 1200 miles. Once the motor is warmed up and you're past the 600 miles, you shouldn't have issues pushing the car a little, obviously don't redline the thing but you're not hurting your car by going over 6K RPM at that point.

After break in shouldn’t be much different, except you can use the 6K to 7.2K range.

The throttle mapping is a little more like the representation in this image, from what I can tell.
