Sport + from Day 1?
Hi Everyone,
I’ve had a bunch of F80, F87, G80 and now G87 (coming Thursday) and on all of them, I went into SP+ from day 1. I never had issues however I think it was last year that someone posted about not going into SP+ until the break in service was done. While I never had problems with any of my cars but I also ended up selling them after a very short ownership timeframe so I didn’t own them long enough to know if I possibly or potentially damaged the car had I owned them longer than I did. My question to the M2 group is if anyone of you used SP+ from day 1 and have you had any issues. I’m aware that most don’t use it every time like I did but I might be keeping this one longer than my others so I wanted to hear from whoever have used SP+ daily from day 1. Thanks. |

If there was a problem using Sport+ before break-in it would be clearly stated in the manual, which it isn't, as far as I know.
In fact, you'd probably just straight up be locked out of it. Last edited by MineralGreyMetallic; 03-25-2024 at 07:17 PM.. |

As long as you keep the rpms below stated values before break in service should be good

I always take it easy on a new car from day one, gradually varying the RPM and slowly working it up but not exceeding the recommended limit pre break-in. Even post break-in I exceed the break-in RPM limit but still gradually ease into for the next 300~500 miles before I ever go WOT. It's not just the engine but the entire drivetrain that's getting worked in. I'd avoid doing anything that has the potential to shock any part of the powertrain. But that's just me, it's your car, do whatever you like.

Kind of like the old wive's tale that "Grandpa's Buick was a dog until 10K miles when it magically had a gazillion horsepower increase and can now beat any car out there."

I don’t think we can appreciate this post enough. It’s this and end thread. Nothing more needs or can be said.

Yes, I did...and kept it in check until breakin service. From breakin to 2,000+ drove no holds barred. ECU came out and sent to femto at 2,000+. |

He foresaw the answer “dealers don’t know things and give me varied answers” when he asked “why not ask the dealer”, and already had the “you’re going to get the same level of varied responses here” in the chamber. Very clever. He played it back so the person could say the exact reason why asking controversial questions could yield different results, no matter where. And, of course, he is right on this one. I mean, we do have information that contradicts what dealers say, and dealers often are wrong and/or lie to get a sale. But never forget we’re the tire lottery forum; the “brakes squeal more depending on the caliper colour” forum; the “my car now makes more power after break-in” forum. So in all cases, YMMV. |

So, I can tell you what happened to a person I spoke with one time when I was getting my car serviced. He bought a brand new G80 and drove it in Sport +. He drove it pretty aggressive but it didn't consist of drifting, doing dig runs, or any sort of racing. He said specifically "he would just mash on it on the freeway after like 15-20 minutes of driving to make sure the engine was "warm enough" in his words. Well 1 week later of ownership his Motor blew. Took them 3 months to get a new Engine delivered from Germany. However, it was covered under warranty surprisingly. I talked to him on the day he was picking up his somewhat "new" car after it was in service for nearly 4 months.
His car had around 480 miles Last edited by Drowsy; 03-26-2024 at 02:16 PM.. Reason: Mileage |

What does "drove it pretty aggressive" mean? Did he keep it under recommended RPMs during break-in? What does "mash on it on the freeway" mean? Did he fully open the throttle, which you're also not supposed to do during break in? Cognitive dissonance is real, and lots of people have a hard time admitting when they've done something wrong. And if that's true, do you think people will be 100% forthcoming when they recount their experiences? I certainly don't. Did he follow the rules and just have bad luck? Possibly. Did he break the rules and now he's seeing the consequences of that? Possibly. Who knows. Can't draw any conclusions. Just follow the rules yourself and err on the side of caution. That is the best you can do. |

Didn't dissect his story nor did I ask for an accurate depiction of his story. I personally wait for the break-in period but op was curious of SP+ so I just told him a story about 1 single guy's experience. |

Break-in a la Ferris Bueler is just going to do more damage than good. Cars need to be driven, not babied. Unsurprisingly I don’t have brake squeal as well. Just don’t take it surfing like the other guy lol |
