E92 front suspension refresh
Hi all
I've recently purchased a 2010 E92 325i and one of the front dampers is leaking. My model is the M sport and has the sports suspension. I'm looking to replace both dampers and figured given the age (and 100k miles) of the car it would be a good idea and cost effective to replace both front coil springs at the same time? (Please say if you disagree.) From the research I've done Bilstein B4 dampers are available for both standard and sport suspension and would be a close replacement for the original dampers but at approx half the cost of the BMW dampers. However I'm getting conflicting messages about which specific parts to order. The Bilstein website suggests the BILSTEIN - B4 22-136602 and 22-136619 models were replaced by: 22-135032 and 22-135049. However multiple online retailers say that 22-135032 and 22-135049 model are not suitable for my car and I should purchase the B4 22-136602 and 22-136619 models. Has anyone ordered the parts recently or know which ones to order? They seem to be about same price and both in stock. Finally does anyone know which springs will be a good like for like OEM replacement for the sport suspension? I'm just changing the front so I want the same spec as the original BMW sport suspension springs. If anyone has a link or recommendation that would be great. Thanks in advance! |

I just purchased B4's for my e91 based on the Bilstein web site, and results were great. So I looked out there for a 335 with sport, and found the same numbers your post indicate: 22-136602 and 22-136619. If I were purchasing for me, those are the part numbers I would use. Sorry that I have nothing for you on springs. I stuck with the originals on my e91. |

My understanding is Sachs are the OEM shocks and springs manufacturers so can't go wrong with these. You just need to ensure you fit the shocks and springs for the sports suspension. I recently fitted Sachs rear M-sport shocks and all feels OEM.

For the cost of BMW springs for the front you could get a set of 4 Eibach Pro springs that are very similar in ride height to BMW M-Sport springs. You could consider doing shocks and springs on all 4 corners.
The springs from BMW are coded aren't they and are specified not only by body type but what equipment you have fitted to the car to get the right spring rate. You can get M-Sport springs by Sachs from ECP I think but they will be a generic M-Sport rather than rated for your particular car spec as they would be as supplied by BMW. That's why I just went the Eibach route. |

If your springs were sagging you'd notice it on the ride height. If the car is still riding at the height it's supposed to unless the springs are really badly rusted I wouldn't bother changing them.

Wouldn't bother changing the springs, but if you do, the Sachs catalog has a cross reference from the BMW spring code (D5, etc). I would use m3 arms, if you're planning on replacing those.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I chatted it through with the garage and decided to go with Sachs dampers and springs in the end. Car is booked in for Friday week and hoping it will feel tip top after the refresh.

Quick update to say that the fitment of Sachs springs and dampers at the front went well. Not a massive difference between old and new but a tad more controlled whilst still rounding off any bad road surfaces nicely. For anyone looking to keep the OEM BMW setup at a lower price point I'd certainly recommend the Sachs springs and dampers.
My next project is getting the alloys refurbished later this week and some new non run flat tyres fitted next week! |

And so the spending begins
I replaced all the shocks on mine with Sachs from ECP, have now done approximately 60,000 miles on them with lowered springs & the shocks are still fine. Good choice on getting a e92 25i What colour is it?
