But compared to the previous M2...

It is what it is, I know, but I am just really shocked.

not sure why people cherry pick the e90 m3 here. its a sedan that didn't even get a cf roof option, most had a sunroof.

e92 m3 (weight by car and driver) was 3650. and it has more rear leg room and headroom than the g87. also 2 more cylinders. 1/2" longer wheelbase.

it all depends on your limits though. gaining 5 pounds in a month for most people is negligible. you wont notice it. but gaining 5 pounds every month for 6 months straight, thats a problem.

Well the g87 Manual is quoted by BMW at 3747 lbs, so 43 lbs more than the e90 and 98 lbs more than the e92. For sure the e92 would be a better comparison but it's still very much in the same ballpark.

The m3/m4 went from ~3700lbs w/ e90/92 then lost some weight with the f gen and went back to ~3750 lbs with the g8x gen. Interestingly the f series will almost certainly be an anomaly where a more modern car actually lost some weight. Followed by an immediate reversion to the mean.

(I realize the above is about m3/m4 weight, not m2. But the m2 has weighed damn near the same as the m4 for both generations)

Maybe there's a lesson to be learned for some people, then? Weight isn't everything, so maybe don't overfocus on it? Just tossing the idea out there.

Criticizing the GTR back then is just as dumb, IMO, as criticizing the G87 today. When we look at these cars as total packages, they are both BEASTS in their respective segments, and that's what really matters, right? Right?

Meh, his takes are better than TH was (4th gear yikes). It's fine, he's not an auto journalist, I have lowered expectations.

Maybe I am sentimental because I got to sit in this specific car before he bought it from Warwick.

Nope.

Weight increases are bad in performance cars. No performance car was ever made better by adding 500lbs to it.

Both the Nissan GT-R and the M2 would be much better performance cars if they weighed less.

All we really are arguing about is whether this particular compromise is palatable to gain access to the good parts (power, handling, new car warranty, technology, you name it here etc.). For most people the answer will be “yes”, but to dismiss the criticism is just lazy.

I find this totally confusing, because the first sentence is the opposite of what you say in the last paragraph.

"Both the Nissan GT-R and the M2 would be much better performance cars if they weighed less."

^ That's overly simplistic, not even strictly true (removing the motor would reduce weight lol), and the kind of argument that I consider lazy. Yes, I DO dismiss these kinds of arguments, because it's just handwaving with no actual details.

"All we really are arguing about is whether this particular compromise is palatable to gain access to the good parts"

^ That would be great if anyone made that argument. But usually they just say "weight... bad" and stop there.

If someone makes an actual formed argument, I'm there for it. Some examples: "I wish we had a rear seat delete option so I could drop 38lbs," or "cast wheels suck and we should have a flow forged option." Totally legit positions.

I dismiss many weight complaints not because I am lazy, but because the arguments are often lazy. Do the work, and I'll gladly engage.

Someone wants less weight, fine, but what specifically do they want to remove, or how much extra are they willing to pay?

I'm just amused by how much time you spend on a forum bitching about things.

Overall, I think their conclusions are are quite good. They do a really good job of pointing out relative strengths and weaknesses.

I'm sure that misleading typo in lap times is gonna be quoted by people who don't read the comments, tho. Really wished they had fixed that in the video, because most people won't see the correction.

I watched this a few hours ago, but was it mentioned here that it has less backseat room than the F87? How is that possible, or even livable?

Is that some sort of weird kink, I never considered it before...

On a more serious note, I've had my child seat in the back of my F22 and it barely fits. I'm not that tall, and it would require my to have almost no recline on the driver seat.

Less headroom, more legroom, compared to F87.

"livable" is relative when talking about rear seats on a coupe. G87 has lots more room than a GR86, among others.

But absolutely, if you are gonna haul adults in the back, neither the F87 or G87 is the right car.
