G87 Front Bumper Factory Defect

Hey guys, situation is this: Couple weeks ago I took delivery of my Toronto Red G87. After getting it home, I noticed a small section of the front bumper was not tucked in under the front grille. They took the car back thinking it was an easy fix, but long story short I was told they couldn't fix it and a new bumper was on order to be painted at their certified body shop. They've not finished painting the bumper, but this morning I told the dealer I would like BMW to purchase the car back from me. Think I'll have issues getting them to buy it back? My thought process is 1) there is about a 0% chance the paint will be a perfect match, especially given its TR color. 2) A 3rd party sprayed bumper due to a factory defect is not what I paid for

Not sure how this made it past the QC process of my local dealer, but that's another story.

On a new car, you won’t be able to tell the difference if it’s done by a good shop. I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

A good shop can match it. If you want the car I would not go through the trouble of a buyback and wait for another.

A good dealer should offer a few “freebies” for the inconvenience. If they don’t, ask for them.

The normal 'PDI' or new car prep inspection should have caught this. They need to take it back. You paid for new, not newly painted - not in the factory. Do not keep this car.

How did they try to fix it? Did they remove the front bumper, front grille & reseat the grille? There are several tabs that fit into slots on the fascia.
My guess is one of the grille tabs is not seated properly in the slot.

Buyback? Lol, no. I think I can hear BMW laughing in the distance right now.

They were hoping it was a clip or a simply fix. The bumper was warped. They tried heating it up and mending it back to form. That failed.

I blows my mind that it made it past QC from the factory and the dealer, unless it was less noticeable before you took ownership. good luck with that issue!

More then likely damaged occurred after it was built but before you took delivery.

No way that left the factory in that condition.

Also the bumper has a noticeable crease right next to the bulge…

They're under no obligation to take it back. I wouldn't even ask - you're talking about something cosmetic here, that is easily fixable. Body shop paint jobs are no less robust than OEM & colors/texture can be matched just fine. It's what they do & have been doing for decades.

There is the lemon law & this won't qualify under that law to go all aggro & demand they take it back as this is cosmetic. All they are required to do it fix it for free or pay someone else to do the work. I'd trust whichever shop is BMW certified.

This could have been discovered at the port & fixed there - and you'd never have a clue that happened. At least now you know & can have it fixed by the best body shop.

I get that perspective, but lets hypothetically say it is not a perfect patch match. Are we considering that "fixed"? I am obligated under the law to accept my car under that circumstance?

Sit back, have a cocktail, and wait for completion of the work. Go from there.

They won't buy it back for that. You have to give them the opportunity to fix it. You accepted delivery therefore you have to give them the opportunity to fix it. This is an easy fix and wouldn't sweat it.

That is indeed annoying. Random crap like this happens more than everyone thinks. (Dealer employee here). The dealer should offer a few things. But obviously the new bumper and paint has no cost to you. If its heavy body work is one thing. A bumper is a bumper. A good certified shop will match the paint excellently and it would be the dealership to confirm this. Bumpers are plastic - the paint will never match metal panels 100.00%. Go look at astons and ferraris for this too. You will not be successful with a buy back. It is nothing mechanical. There wont even be a carfax on the car because there is no claim.
Just relax, you get a brand new bumper and roll on.
Personally, my ZB M2 was damaged in transport last Fall. I was notified. A new rear bumper was put on and painted at the port. I cannot tell the difference and appraising cars is one of my dealer roles.
If there is an open claim with bmw (not the dealer) then maybe see if they will cover a front ppf wrap or something for the inconvenience.

I'd be negotiating for a heavy discount on some new M Perf wheels or something. I wouldn't really expect much more than that.

I had a paint defect on a custom ordered Mercedes. It looked like a grape juice stain under the clear coat. I didn’t notice it for several weeks. I brought it back and the dealer had it reprayed for me. I called MBUSA to complain about the issue and see what goodwill they could offer. It was an awkward conversation as they wouldn’t offer anything. I realized I had to tell them what I wanted, then they would either accept it or counter. They wouldn’t make the first offer. I got $1500 in the form of an Amazon gift card. I have no idea if BMW operates the same way. But I would have the dealer fix then go to BMWNA and see what they could give you. Shit happens, you’re not getting a new car, but how they treat you matters.

I disagree, its a relatively pricey new car with a defect and he has every right to complain. I agree with the fact that he should allow them to fix it and then do a very detailed inspection to ensure that everything is matching and if it doesn't make them fix it until it does. But I also agree with the fact that it should have been seen before taking ownership of the car.

There is nothing wrong with making companies correct mistakes / damages. If everyone had the mindset of "it's just a (insert item here), chill out" then companies would produce shit because no one would care to hold them accountable.

Its just a door falling off jet...........you know. Get the dealer fix it. Not a Boeing issue lol!

Well said. Ravenseal might want to seal his mouth with such comments. The OP deserves full attention of the dealer/BMW to correct this.
