Is maintenance and services okay or does this car get the M tax?
Planning on getting an M240i and was wondering if servicing this car is cheaper than an M2?
Thanks! |

Don't have a 240i. I have a 2024 230xi.
And a 2023 M2. 230xi has been in 3 times for out of pocket services. Two oil/filter services and a rear tire was replaced due to a puncture. The costs were: $161.34 (oil/filter); $160.71 (oil/filter); $396.65 (new rear tire). The M2 has been in 4 times for out of pocket services/tire repairs. $191.21 (oil/filter); $62.58 (rear tire slow leak (puncture) repair); $62.58 (the *other* rear tire same thing...); $196.36 (oil/filter). The biggest difference in oil/filter service cost is the oil cost. The M2 requires more oil and it costs more per liter. |

It’s more than just oil tho. Servicing is more frequent and virtually every part will be more expensive.
Brake discs and pads are almost twice the price for example. Very early on in my motoring career, a mechanic said to me never by the top of the range, the M version, the RS, the Gti (as it was back then) etc. They are significantly more expensive all round. He said always buy the model down and upgrade to beat the performance. It will also be a nicer car to drive. |

I stayed with this but not 100%. Even if I bought the middle of the model line though I never mod'd the car. When I wanted a higher performance car rather than mod my Boxster I bought a Cayman S. When I decided the Scat Pack (485hp) wasn't enough power I bought a Hellcat (707hp). I traded in a 2022 BMW 230i for my 2023 M2. And ended up with 2024 230xi after trading in a 2023 MINI JCW. Neither the M2 or the 230xi has needed anything beyond oil/filter services and the tire puncture repairs and tire replacement were unexpected. Both my 230xi and M2 came with BMW Ultimate Care for 3 years, 30K miles. This includes: Engine Oil Engine Filter Brake Fluid Cabin Micro Filter(s) Engine Air Filter(s) Spark Plugs Remote Control/Key Battery Vehicle Check Fuel Filter (Diesel engines only) Believe some services (oil/filter for instance) are triggered by the Condition Based System (CBS). Of course the above doesn't cover other consumables. There are tires and brakes. My experience with tires on high performance cars like the 996 Turbo, Hellcat, is even when driven with restraint the tires can have short lives. My Turbo would go through at set of rear tires in 20K miles. The fronts lasted 40K miles. (This tire life required not only my avoiding hooning around but also good alignment.) The Hellcat when I traded it in with 27.5K miles was about due for tires. Maybe they would have lasted to 30K. Oh, and this was the front tires. I had to replace the rear tires at 13K miles not because of wear -- believe it or not both front and rear tires had the same tread depth -- but because the driver side rear tire was punctured and I replaced both rear tires. As for brakes the Turbo front brakes lasted 124K miles. Rear brakes were worn but the wear warning light was not on when I sold the car with 161K miles. But with the Hellcat it was clear from the front disc wear lip the front brakes at least were close to being due. The used car evaluator noted the brake wear -- he didn't measure this just went by the lip as I did. The difference in brake wear arose because the Turbo weighed ~3400lbs the Hellcat weighed ~4450lbs. The Turbo was fitted with a 6-speed manual the Hellcat an 8-speed automatic. While I did not downshift to slow the Turbo when slowing for a stop just lifting off the gas pedal had the Turbo slowing quite a bit and as a result brake use was reduced. The Hellcat being an automatic and heavy slowed hardly at all when I lifted off the gas pedal. Thus the brakes were used way more often and applied at a higher speed and did I mention the Hellcat was a pig? Thus I think the M2, being fitted with a 6-speed manual, will be easy on the brakes. The M2 brakes are rather large which I hope translates into exceptional brake life not exceptional additional cost when it comes to renew the brakes... However, the weight of the car (3840lbs) could mean the M2 brake life won't quite as good as the Turbo but hopefully not as bad as the Hellcat. The 230xi has the 8-speed automatic and while the car is not that heavy it still weighs in at 3446lbs. I honestly don't know how the brakes will fare just have to wait and see. |

How and why are you comparing an inline 6 and a 4 banger? IF you go to a dealership down in South Florida, you sure aren't getting any oil change for an G87 or G42 M240 for $191 and change. |

I have no experience with car ownership in Florida. But I have considerable experience with car ownership in northern CA. And I'm sure I'd not get oil/filter services there for either of my cars for anywhere near the <$200 pay here. (My Boxster oil/filter services started out under $150 but by the time I ended my Porsche ownership experience the cost was >$400. The Turbo cost even more.) |
