Putting radiators on the front must be a design flaw too.

Where do you propose BMW put the oil cooler? There are only so many places and all are vulnerable.

So I think due to the size of the puncture, and the engine running the oil must have squirted out 3-4qt before the engine was turned off.
I’m really sorry this happened to you and I hope it all works out for you. You should be out driving around your new M2.

Putting on any radiator/HE without any protection, as on the G87, is the design flaw. I said this previously in this thread, guess you missed that too.

I mean, G82 M4 has mesh grilles on all its front holes (the ones without carbon exterior pack,) so the mesh themselves shouldn't do too much harm on the G87 that shares the exact same components.

The puddle under the car theory is not a good one.

We don't know when the puncture under the car happened and oil at 40 psi (not sure what this engine is), is ejected quickly even through a small hole. Most of the OP's oil is up the road from where he parked. Just need enough oil loss to starve the pickup and you've lost the bottom end at a minimum.

This is a true tragedy for the OP; I think BMW should have provided a bit of protection around the oil cooler specifically as there is no real warning until it is almost catastrophic.

I don’t know why our cars don’t have that rubber flap under the bumper, and European cars do… I’m wondering if that can help deflect debris.

I know right. Had plans to be driving around during the Christmas break. Even order carbon fiber mirror caps.

Lol, now my family did not even get to see the car yet because it went from the dealership I bought it in NY to the local MI dealership that it is sitting with a blown engine.

Going by the roundness of the tube distortion, it may not even be a rock, perhaps something more like a pronged metal object.

Doesn't mean to say extra protection isn't advisable, but this damage does not seem consistent with just a small rock from off the road surface.
My theory is it was a rectangular object which would mean it hit the 1st spot along it's length then it spinner it upwards hitting the 2nd spot harder piercing through. Also note that there is only 1 hole not 2

Do you remember hearing anything hit under the car?

I would get it just because I think it makes the front look better.

A parralel radiator is a lot less vulnerable than a perpendicular one. Radiators need access to ambient, you can’t cover them up without negative effects.

You also assume this was a rock. It might have been a piece of steel that would have ripped through any screen in place.
I'll say the ZunSport screen I installed is fairly stout. It would take a lot to "rip" through it and damage then damage the cooler, imo.

Can't speak in any proven manner but an impact with a fist size rock or hunk of steel with the car travelling at 60-80mph...good luck. I hope for the best...

Not a bit. Don't remember seeing anything on the road or hearing any sound. My faint memory tells me that someone back in the traffic honked, was totally unaware why at that movement, but now it may be because my car was splashing oil over them.

Perhaps. You could also install a couple spacers on the bolts/screws to create a little space between the grille & the cooler which may help deflect debris that hits the grille.

PM me your VIN, that way I can be sure it's the right part number. I remember the PN for EU and US cars was different. Don't know if CA shares the same PN as US. Or give me the VIN to any CA car...

Those fools, little did they know you had activated the oil slick button to shake off the cops that were in pursuit.

Update:

got a quote for 38k for the engine and another 8k for the turbos. Dealer said there nothing anyone would do on the BMW side, my only option is insurance, which is what I guessed.

So what are my options? My insurance said this will be a collision damage claim according to their books and since MI is a no-fault state, this makes no difference whose fault it is. So my premiums are going to be affected.

What's the threshold for insurance to total the car?
