BMW M240i Coupe vs Porsche 718 Cayman vs Audi TT RS: 2022 group test review
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Nice comparison test. Our beloved bimmer comes in first overall. Cayman is the best driver's car but weak engine holds it back. Audi is the fastest but least fun to drive. All three are great cars, can't go wrong with either one. |

I personally love the Cayman, but only after you skip a couple trims. The Cayman S and above trims are beautiful cars and come with solid performance as well. They just cost a ton more. |

That's what happens when you price your products in the stratosphere. If anything, the Audi got an unfair advantage that the other two were in the mid-40's (£) and the TT-RS was in the high-50's (should have tested the TT-S instead to keep price parity).

I just realized after you saying that the Cayman was in the 40s the article has it's cost listed at ~$47k euros. It's $60k brand new on the Porsche website so I'm not sure where they got that figure from to begin with.

Dumb review. The cayman is a pure sports car not trying to be practical and it loses for that? Lol. I have a TTRS and a E92 M3 and wouldn't sell either for the new M240i. I've driven my buddy's and while it's very nice, I enjoy my cars more. The TTRS is better looking (though the one in the review is an ugly spec), nicer interior, better engine/sound and faster overall. Mine is stage 2 with suspension parts as well so tough to compare at this point but you can definitely rotate/have fun with the upgraded RSB. It's a perfect novice to intermediate skill track car and very practical as a DD. My daughter fits perfectly in the back too. These 3 cars just aren't a great comparison IMO. The TTRS is competition for last gen M2 and Cayman S. Porsche also prices for exclusivity so it'll always be more.

Unless I'm missing somewhere that a new Cayman goes for under $50k? |

But it also lists the M240i at $45k. The two aren't 2k apart. So if it's in pounds I'm wrong in saying the Cayman's price is incorrect but the M240i's price is drastically inflated. It's listed base model price is more expensive than a fully loaded model.

Premature test, they should have waited for the M2 to compare with the Cayman. Those are are more in line with pricing and cross shopping.

Generally European cars are always more expensive due to EU taxes as well as different environment-related legislation (stricter). As a consequence the engines are differently mapped and exhaust fumes are furtherly processed, by adding different exhaust parts to mitigate emissions. As a rule of thumb, same cars are always more expensive in Europe. I bought my m240i xdrive for $58k in Utah and in Greece (COO) it was $84k for the same exact spec. |

They are indeed 2k £ apart in the UK. You can check the UK websites of BMW and Porsche to confirm.

They know what they’re doing: whether you like it or not they got all those views and AdSense dollars. Now when the G87 comes out they can make another bunch of videos (first drive, full review, 5 things I hate, 5 things I love, side-by-side) and get all those juicy clicks.

The G42 M240i xDrive is an incredible expression of the BMW sport coupe concept. Yes, a 3,900-pound AWD car that’s only available with a torque converter automatic is that car.
The B58+ZF8 combo is as good as it gets in this car. It is delicious just how smooth and effortless and punchy this powertrain is, and pushing the power through the RWD-biased xDrive means that it’s all completely and utterly usable in whatever conditions with whatever ham-fisted inputs. M2 Comp performance, but easily accessible for most drivers with little compromise in driving enjoyment. This car is why weight is an overrated metric for a fun daily street-driven sports coupe. With greater weight comes a wider car with a more rigid chassis that drives lighter than lighter cars that came before it. I’ve been daily driving an E36 328iS for the past few days, and you’d never tell this car is like 600 pounds lighter. So many things go into the subjective feeling of “weight” - steering, throttle response, outright acceleration and pace, grip and handling, etc. The G42 feels straight up effortless compared to any of these older, much lighter machines, you’d easily think it’s 2,800 pounds if no one showed you the spec sheet. Weight also gives you a fantastically appointed interior that’s comfortable and filled with every desirable amenity. A surprisingly luxurious-feeling compact sports coupe that will coddle you on the commute and not make you pay a price for that thrilling drive that’s a drive mode setting away. The G42 is crazy for $55k. The G87 … can’t wait. |
