Confused on progman v29.2 update: Can it detect PREVIOUS tunes?

Okay, so ive been reading as much of the new info on the progman v29.2 update as i can. But i cant really tell if it can/will detect a tune you had, but took out???

This is important to me because i am about to take my car in for a wastegate actuator fix/LIMP codes....its been about 2months now after taking my JB2 out. Now, the last time i went to the dealership, they cleared all my codes, but when i go back in for warranty service, will they update my DME and see that i had a piggyback....thus, voiding the warranty work on the wastegates????

THanks in Advance

I am aware two separate mechanisms by which 29.2 can detect presence of piggybacks.

1. Torque measurement/estimation: engine output in excess of 300 ft/lbs is either not allowed or produces a code. I first read this in a post by J. Conforti, who seems a very credible source. However, it's not clear to me how engine torque can be directly measured by the ECU. Torque estimation, on the other hand, seems perfectly straightforward by using various known variables to predict engine output. However, this method would be susceptible to modification of input signals by the piggyback.

2. Impedence testing: by measuring the impedence of sensor circuitry the addition of a piggyback and its associated harness allows the ECU identify the presence of a piggyback and store a secret code.

In either case, it seems most likely that the past use of a JB will not be detected upon upgrading the software at this point in time. The one caveat would be if the ECU has secret data logs storing maximum values for certain parameters such as boost, in which case the could trigger an excessive torque code.

Of course this is all speculation - but what else can we do.....

Accept the fact that if you modify the engine your warranty is gone?

Jim said the dme 80 with the latest progman just reduces the effectiveness of pigybacks it doesn't store the "warranty gone" code. its the dme 81 that stores the "warranty gone" code.

well, once they updated it to DME81, will it detect the old tune though. I know it will store the new code if i ever tried to put a piggyback in after the update, but what about before? Did DME 80 have the capibility to store torque measurement/etc..?

Remember...the DME81 is new hardware, not new software. The software update people are worried about is PROGMAN 29.2.

Accept the fact that you own a 328 and should stay out of this section.

My understanding is that msd80 dme can only do the "torque guesstimation" method with 29.2. msd81 can do the "torque guesstimation" method AND impedance checking..

I am guessing BMW isn't entirely confident of the torque guesstimation and voiding warranties, else they wouldn't have needed to do a hardware rev and release msd81. I wouldn't test it though!

In any case, if you HAD a tune BEFORE 29.2, there's no way the ecu can know that and store a code USING THE METHODS THEY'RE ADDING!

If your dme still recorded codes (those sneaky hidden ones that only bmw field engineers can see) then you may still be jacked.

Will the Progman v29.2 store a "secret code" if a tune procede, sstt, AA, helix, etc... is attached?

Jim said it would, however I wonder if thats just another signal that can be modified by a piggyback.

From what Jim said, if the dme generates more than a certain amount of torque, the flag will be set, even on older (v80) DMEs. This is with progman 29.2.

It is unlikely that the work you are having done would cause involvement of the field engineers, hence I would not worry. But yes, if they really want to know, they know. But my read is that BMW is rightfully nervous about the invasion of privacy implications of FASTA. More on a customer relations basis than a legal one. Big brother...

Big brother is already watching. These cars have a data recorder too.

The cars already have a data recorder that can tell BMW exactly how fast, how you braked etc in the event of an accident. This information can infact be legally subpoenaed by the likes of the NTSB just like they do with aircraft black boxes. Even the Corvettes have it too. Did you see that was on the news in that nasty 335i Crash where some kids slammed into a divider at over 150mph? If the driver had lived, it would have been used against him.

im gonna doubt unless you have the HARDWARE-MSD81 or the software update v29.2, that anything will show up even if your program was updated now.

I'm just waiting... for a post on e90 to say "dealer denied my warranty due to piggy back being logged in DME" . I'm guessing around 6 months, then people are gonna be pissed.

apparently the new skyline is locked down pretty hard from nissan... we'll see if that nut gets cracked.

good luck guys.

+1. My new source (you know who you are...) told me that 29.2 got into dealerships last week so it isn't on any of our cars yet. If you go in soon there is a chance that you car will be upgraded....

I guess that answers my question

SSTT is going in tomorrow. I'm not really sure why I need more power than this but I can't help myself.
